Why does the job exist?
The Livestock Assistant position, assists in maintaining museum grounds, cleaning animal exhibits, maintaining farm equipment, and helping with the care of Museum's living collections. May perform daily demonstrations to museum visitors, and help to maintain a safe environment for the museum's livestock collection and visitors. This position is essential for maintaining staffing levels for the safety of employee, coworkers, visitors and livestock by allowing two individuals working together at all times on a remote part of the museum grounds.
How does it get done?
Assists in the care and wellbeing of various livestock and farm animals on display at the Museum. Includes daily feeding, watering, habitat cleaning, building, repair, and maintaining fences and animal corrals, and performing welfare checks on livestock. May also assist in weighing, branding, and basic medical treatment of animals in an production agricultural setting. In addition to livestock care, the duties may include providing interpretive communication of daily milking demonstrations and ongoing ranching or farming practices to visitors, adult tour groups, and school tours of all ages to present the history and future of farming and ranching in New Mexico. This position requires exposure to livestock and the use and basic maintenance of farming equipment and basic landscaping tools.

Ideal Candidate
1) Has at least 6 months landscaping experience and familiar with the tools used
2) Be familiar with farm livestock and their behavior
3) Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, dust, etc.)

Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Executive Order 2021-066 requires all employees with the State of New Mexico to provide either proof of COVID-19 vaccination (including proof of a booster dose of vaccine by January 17, 2022, or within four weeks of becoming eligible for a booster dose) or proof of a COVID-19 viral test every week.
The Public Health Order (on Vaccination) dated December 2, 2021, requires Congregate Care Facility Workers and Hospital Workers to have received a primary series of vaccination by October 6, 2021, and a booster dose of vaccine by January 17, 2022, or within four weeks of becoming eligible for a booster.

Position is subject to working in adverse weather conditions such as exposure to heat, cold, wind, rain, dust and loud noises from farm equipment and working with large farm animals daily. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must work weekends -Working schedule is Tuesday through Sunday - off on Monday and Tuesdays and. possible extended working hours to include evenings and holidays.
Must complete a state certified drivers safety course within 90 days of employment and maintain a valid NM drivers license.
