Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.
The position accessions, organizes, and curates records within the Historic Preservation Division's (HPD) archives of historic and archaeological records; assists qualified users and members of the public with appropriate access to historic and archaeological records; serves as HPD's records liaison; coordinates the Historic Marker Program; completes reviews of Section 106 and state undertakings on behalf of the State Historic Preservation Officer; and various duties as needed.
How does it get done?
The Historian maintains the New Mexico Cultural Resource Inventory (NMCRIS) database and archaeological and historical archives and employs best archival practices and serves as the division's records liaison with State Records and Archives and processes requests under the Inspection of Public Records Act. This position advises and assists members of the public with proposals for new markers and revised marker text; researches and prepares documentation for the Cultural Properties Review Committee; attends meetings and responds to questions from Committee members and the public; and maintains the Historic Marker Program files and database. The Historian facilitates access to cultural resource data for HPD staff, researchers, and members of the public; and assists, as needed, with project review under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and state laws.

This position serves HPD staff, archaeological consultants, cultural resource and preservation professionals, state and federal agencies, Native American tribes, and the public.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has a Graduate degree in History or a closely related field of study; a minimum of two (2) years of full-time professional experience applying the theories, methods, and practices of history; a minimum of 12 months of full-time professional experience working with the cultural resources of New Mexico; basic to intermediate knowledge of computer operating systems, web browsers, software applications, and digital file management; and experience working with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in History or related field and three (3) years of experience in research, writing, teaching, interpretation, or other demonstrable professional activity with an academic institution, historic organization or agency. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
