Purpose of Position

Why does the job exist?
To greet and assist park visitors. Develop and implement educational programs for the public concerning forestry division programs, wildfire prevention, forest management and watershed restoration and forest and wildfire conservation educational program s. Seek Grant monies for Smokey Bear Historical Park to assist with the development and maintenance of programs and educational gardens. Develop and implement interpretive displays including garden displays and forest types found throughout New Mexico.
How does it get done?
Provide Park visitors with clear, concise information about wildland fire prevention and the local surrounding area. Maintain and repair park facilities, grounds, and equipment. Provide management
of the Smokey Bear Historical Park website in accordance with EMNRD policies. Participate in wildland fire suppression activities as able.
Who are the customers?
Primarily the open public and citizens of the State of New Mexico, however visitors to the park come from all across the United States and Internationally.
Ideal Candidate
1. Experience and knowledge conducting guided tours for the public.
2. Experience and knowledge maintaining park facilities and grounds to include greenhouses and water sprinkler systems.
3. Minimum of at least six (6) months experience working alongside or managing volunteers.
4. Minimum of six (6) months experience talking to groups in a formal or informal setting.
5. Minimum of six (6) months experience working as a first contact or front counter person.
6. Minimum of at least six (6) months on experience in any one of combination of the following fields: basic construction, carpentry; electrical; plumbing; heavy equipment of farm equipment-operation; heavy equipment or farm equipment-maintenance or repair; fisheries or wildlife habitat management.

7. Experience performing skilled or semi-skilled maintenance of repair work on any on or combination of light or medium or heavy duty motorized equipment.
8. Experience with the collection of entry fees and cash register use.
9. Experience working with school groups, and other organizations.
10. Minimum of two (2) years' experience with computers and associated software programs including Microsoft Office package.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalent and six (6) months of experience in parks, monuments, museums, interpretive/educational ranger, field archaeologist and/or ruins preservationist at a historic site. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
The position is labor intensive to include: digging, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting, as well as standingfor long periods of time. The position requires the use of various hand and power tools, as well as operatingvehicles and heavy equipment. One may be required to work in adverse weather conditions, extreme coldand heat for extended periods of time. Shift work may be required on holidays or during park events.Emergency maintenance situations may also arise requiring extended hours of work. Sitting at a desk or computer workstation is also required. Must be willing to accept assignment/transfer to another geographic location. Extensive travel in region wide area. Weekend/holiday work required.
