The salary range for this position is $35,000-$45,000
The purpose of this position is to assist in the regulation of barbers, barbershops, barber schools, electrologists, laser hair practitioners, electrology and laser schools, and electrology and laser facilities by:
The incumbent will be responsible for inspections in the eastern third of North Carolina. The incumbent will occasionally need to cover work in other parts of the state, such as when exam or board meetings occur in other parts of the state.
The position requires considerable travel, including a significant number of overnight or multiple-overnight trips. Since the position will include a state-assigned vehicle for official business, the individual must meet the driver requirements of the Department of Administration Motor Fleet Management Division, including:
Graduation from high school and two years experience as a licensed barber; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Management preference: graduation from high school, current N.C. Barber Instructor License, and five years of experience as a licensed barber in North Carolina. Under state law, the board cannot employ an inspector who is actively practicing in the barbering profession and in competition with other members of the profession. Please be aware that if you are hired, you would not be able to practice as a barber or barber instructor, although you could hold licenses.

- Conducting inspections of new and existing barber shops and schools to ensure compliance with safety and sanitation regulations;
- Verifying that barbers are properly licensed and practicing according to safety and sanitation regulations;
- Investigating complaints within the Board's jurisdiction--including reviewing records such as photos, statements, financial documents--and preparing written reports to be reviewed by a supervisor or the Board;
- Issuing citations for violation of state laws;
- Testifying at Board hearings or court proceedings; and
- Conducting practical examinations for individuals applying to become apprentice barbers, registered barbers, or barber instructors.
- Inspecting electrology and laser hair practice facilities.

Since the position will include a state-assigned vehicle for official business, the individual must meet the driver requirements of the Department of Administration Motor Fleet Management Division, including:
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license that has fewer than six points;
- A driving record free of serious infractions that would cause DMV to designate the person as Ineligible Permanently to Drive a School Bus.
- The ability to understand statutes and regulations, including health laws and agency rules;
- Excellent customer-service skills and high levels of integrity;
- Ability to work without day-to-day supervision;
- Working knowledge of inspection methods and investigation techniques;
- Working knowledge of barbershop operations;
- Ability to examine mannequins for practical exams to make sure they comply with testing regulations;
- Ability to type clear and detailed reports that accurately and comprehensively summarize the results of investigations or violations;
- Familiarity with computers, including knowledge of Microsoft 365 software (e.g. Word, Excel) and the ability to learn new software programs.
