The position of Social Worker (SW) within DAC Reentry and Rehabilitation involves utilization of the full range of social work skills. The Social Worker will provide psycho-social assessments, aftercare and post release assistance, advocate, planner, and data manager.
This Social Worker position will be assigned to outpatient mental health duties and responsibilities in Eastern Region at Craven Correctional Institution in NC. This position will provide coverage at other DAC Correctional Institutions as assigned and needed. Facilities range from minimum, medium and up to Close custody.  
The primary purpose is to protect the public by maintaining the security, safety, and welfare of offenders, by stabilizing mental illnesses and encouraging offenders approaching release to maintain their treatment in the community.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team, assessing offender needs for post release medical and mental health treatment, DD treatment plan development and assessment, community resources development, and community referrals for offenders with severe mental illnesses for aftercare services
  • Identification and treatment of special populations
  • Provides assessment and recommendations for ADA referrals and completes Medicaid applications for offenders at these institutions referred by the Medicaid and ADA program managers

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with

About the Division
Rehabilitation and Reentry is a division within the Department of Adult Correction.  The division provides the continuity of services to individuals who have been incarcerated or are transitioning to the community.  Division staff work collaboratively with internal prison staff, Community Supervision (PPO) staff and Local Reentry Councils developing, implementing, and monitoring correctional and reentry interventions for justice involved individuals.  

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. We will not review resumes in lieu of the Experience and Education listed on the application.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and application of social work theory, principles, and practices
  • Demonstrated experience of local (community), state, regional and national (federal) resources and agencies that have services available and applicable to offenders
Management Preferences:   
  • Significant understanding of human behavior and its interplay with social environment
  • Proven knowledge of the provision of direct and indirect services in a correctional setting
  • Experience working with individuals with mental illness, substance use, or intellectual or development disabilities
  • Utilization of the ecological systems perspective of person-in-environment

Master's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution
