Job Title: GIS Analyst

Job Description:
Are you a skilled GIS Analyst looking for an exciting career working with Forestry and Wildland Fire in the Great State of Utah? The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (FFSL) in the Utah Department of Natural Resources, is looking for someone like you to fill their GIS Analyst position to support the Forestry and Wildland Fire programs. This is an exciting position working with a great team that offers a flexible schedule, telecommuting opportunities, and occasional travel through Utah.

Principal Duties:
As a GIS Analyst:

  • Support the GIS and mapping needs of our Forestry and Wildland Fire programs. ~
  • Design, configure, create and support new GIS tools, workflows, integrations, spatial databases and methods for data collection, processing, interpretation and display, in coordination with GIS and IT staff and groups.
  • Plan, publish, design, update/upgrade, and maintain FFSL's geographic information system data and services in coordination with GIS and IT staff and groups.
  • Support wildland fire incidents with GIS and other duties as needed.
  • Coordinate GIS data, projects and activities between FFSL programs, area offices, state and federal agencies, cities, counties, special service districts, and other organizations. ~
  • Perform spatial analysis, and model complex scenarios in order to deliver and track FFSL programs, initiatives and policy and facilitate executive decision making.
  • Publish GIS services and map products to help FFSL achieve its mission and objectives.
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • GIS certification from an accredited college or university, the Geographic Information Systems.
  • Certification Institute (GISCI), or Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI).
  • At least 1-2 years of direct GIS experience.
  • A positive, open-minded and collaborative outlook and attitude.
  • A strong work ethic.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience and/or knowledge with GIS work in natural resources and/or wildland fire ~ posses GIS skills such as cartography and spatial analysis.
  • Experience with using and ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Knowledge of emergency management and homeland security concepts; state government agency.
  • Obligations under the National Response Framework, NIMS, and ICS (IS-00100.b, IS-00200.b).

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree or higher in Geography, GIS, Cartography, Natural Resources, or a related field.
  • At least 1-2years of experience as a GIS Analyst or similar position with GIS as the primary duty.
  • Proficiency with ESRI products such as ArcPro 3.0 , Desktop 10.7 software suite (ArcMap and ArcCatalog).
  • Proficiency with other office applications such as MS Office, Google Suite (Chrome, Drive, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Sites, etc), and Internet based services, etc.
  • Ability to provide direct GIS support to FFSL staff and partners.
  • Ability to read, interpret, analyze, map, and display spatial and non-spatial data in both digital and physical formats.
  • Knowledge of GPS/GIS principles including, but not limited to, cartography and map design, projection and coordinate systems, and GIS data management.
  • Knowledge of large format plotters and scanners, office printers, etc.
  • Knowledge of mobile GIS based applications.
  • Knowledge of recreational GPS systems (such as Garmins) and how to extract GIS data from them.
  • Knowledge of and ability to successfully administer and manage multiple, complex, GIS projects and analyses.
  • Ability to constructively work in a team.
  • Excellent decision making and problem solving skills by identifying key facts, exploring alternatives.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Automobile, etc. Outdoor work, sometimes strenuous, in all types of environments, terrain and weather conditions is optional.
  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated, e.g. safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • In-state and occasional out-of-state travel by vehicle and airplane will be required.
  • Overnight travel will occasionally be required.
  • The successful candidate will be required to possess the following certifications from the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA): IS-00100.b, IS-00200.b, IS-00700.a and IS-0800.b.
  • If the candidate does not possess the certifications at the time of hire, they will be required to obtain them within the first nine months of employment.

  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc.
  • DNR and FFSL required training.
