SBI Agent- SAKI Investigator

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is seeking a sworn investigator for the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) at Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS).  

Principal Duties:

• Professionally represent the Utah Department of Public Safety at training, seminars, and other law enforcement meetings, casework and conferences in Utah and nationally.
• Provide investigative support from DPS/SBI to local law enforcement agencies statewide regarding the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) grant.
• Work closely with the Statewide Intelligence Analysis Center (SIAC) and the Utah Bureau of Forensic Services (UBFS) on collaboration and information sharing.
• Conduct criminal and civil investigations and gather evidence, documents, records, criminal history, and relevant case information.  
• Locate and interview witnesses, victims, and suspects who have information or are involved in a case; write search warrants, serve subpoenas, and conduct surveillance.
• Make arrests, screen charges, testify in official proceedings, and transport witnesses.
• Conduct trauma informed interviews that do not retraumatize victims or witnesses.  
• Coordinate investigations and training involving outside agencies, including out of state.
• Attend meetings and multidisciplinary teams of attorney(s), medical personnel, scientists, advocates and other disciplines for case review, planning, and progression.
• Provide training on best practices in sexual assault investigations, both in-person and virtually, to large groups of people from system and community-based organizations.
• Attend Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) meetings across the state, both in-person and virtually, to network with agencies and promote consistent, sustainable response.
• Work on cases that may require Advanced DNA Testing, up to and including Investigative Genetic Genealogy.  Liaison with agencies to promote new technologies.

Ideal Candidate

• 21 years of age or older, no maximum age.
• Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy (POST certification, plus seven (7) years as a Detective; OR a combination of five (5) years as a Detective and a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. 
• Proficient writing and communication skills.
• Ability to create policy, and provide input on protocols and legislative issues.  
• Experienced public speaker/presenter.  
• Understanding of DNA Evidence and the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). 
• Experience working violent felonies, including homicide and sexual assault. 
• Willing to travel out of state to work cases or attend trainings and conferences.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferences:

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate a robust knowledge of resources, and network of collaborators - both system and community-based, who support response to sexual assault and other violent felonies.

Supplemental Information

• One for One salary credit may be given for prior law enforcement experience.
• $2,500 hiring bonus for those with prior law enforcement experience.
• Physical Assessment Testing (PT) required.
• United States citizen or a non US citizen that has a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) card who:  1) has been in the United States legally for at least five (5) years AND 2) has legal authorization to work in the United States.  Only having EAD status does NOT qualify you for this position. 
• The incumbent will be required to reside within 50 miles of the Investigation Bureau (4501 S 2700 W., Taylorsville, UT, 84129). 

Salary : $30 - $43
