The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is looking for a talented, detail-oriented individual to fill the Wildlife Senior GIS Analyst role in our Salt
Lake office.
This position supports the Wildlife Section of DWR where the incumbent will design and support spatial data and field collection workflows, manage wildlife GIS data, and produce and curate a robust set of data products to inform DWR customers, decisions, and policies. Your creative GIS solutions will support and enhance Utah’s wildlife and the many benefits it provides to our lives.
Principal Duties
As the Senior GIS Analyst, you will:
- design, implement, and support various wildlife data collection workflows and processes.
- support the spatial data and geospatial analysis needs of the DWR Wildlife Section.
- scope, plan, and complete GIS-based projects using a variety of software and programming tools.
- deliver spatial and cartographic data products that enable our stakeholders to visualize and interact with our data.
- promote discovery and analysis of new data trends by making wildlife data accessible and interpretable.
- collaborate with a team of GIS professionals and wildlife staff to produce innovative wildlife data tools and products.
- perform and automate QA/QC duties including the development of verification and validation workflows.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this position has:
- A bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, wildlife biology, or another applicable, natural resource-related field.
- At least 2 years of demonstrated successful GIS work experience in a wildlife or natural resource-related field.
- An understanding and appreciation for the history and traditions associated with hunting, fishing, trapping, and shooting sports, and recognition of how those activities support wildlife conservation.
- Experience and skill in cartographic design and map-making.
- Experience with using, configuring, and manipulating ESRI and other GIS-related products and tools.
- Specialized technology skills such as scripting, database design and theory, spatial modeling, web map creation, dashboard design, and cartography.
- The ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely.
- Demonstrated abilities to build collaborative, solution-based partnerships and work with diverse people.
- An understanding of wildlife field methods and associated tools.
- The ability to find creative, pragmatic ways to solve problems and improve processes.
- Attention to detail and dedication to preserving and authenticating data integrity.

- At least 2 years of demonstrated successful GIS-related work experience in wildlife or natural resources-related field.
- Knowledge of wildlife field methods.
- Demonstrated ability with a variety of computer information systems.
- Knowledge of database queries and design.
- Ability to write and communicate well.
- Advanced GIS-based certification/experience and/or master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university or commensurate experience.
- Proficiency with current ESRI software, services, systems, and architecture.
- Specialized GIS skills such as spatial tool customization, scripting workflows, advanced cartography, spatial modeling, web
- map creation, and advanced/cloud database design.
- GIS or other project management-related experience.
- Experience configuring and developing web and mobile GIS-based applications.
- Experience using Postgres/GIS, Google Cloud Platform, R, and other leading-edge GIS products and tools.
- Knowledge of both cloud-based database design, as well as landscape-scale wildlife study design and implementation.
- Understand and use GIS concepts, analytical techniques, and automation methods, including computerized mapping and
- digital data conversion, geoprocessing, data manipulation, management, and analysis.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite software products.
- Ability to work with diverse people who may have competing viewpoints.
Special Working Conditions or Physical Requirements:
- Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated, e.g. safe use of office
- equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
- Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing;
- bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc.
- There are also opportunities to participate in hands-on fieldwork which is conducted in variable weather conditions and
- terrain — there could be walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, and possibly carrying items up to 50 pounds,
- depending on physical ability.
- May require occasional travel within or out of state for multiple nights.
- This is a full-time position, which occasionally requires irregular hours, including evenings and some work on weekends
- and during emergency situations.
- Overnight travel within Utah, and occasionally outside of the state, is occasionally required to attend meetings,
- conferences, support wildlife management projects, etc., and may be for multiple nights.
- Valid Driver's License required.
