Overview

Buildings & General Service at the State of Vermont has an exciting and unique opportunity with room for growth as a BGS Maintenance Mechanic I within the Operations & Management Division.

This position will be responsible for the daily maintenance at 32 and 50 Cherry Street in Burlington, as well as part of a larger team that performs these duties at other state facilities within the greater Burlington area. The Maintenance Mechanic I will work primarily on grounds and outdoor maintenance. This position will also be asked to assist with other duties as assigned including but not limited to; electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting and lock repair. Travel between these facilities may be required and will utilize a state owned and or a privately owned vehicle.

This is a full-time position, and the hours are Monday through Friday, 7am to 3:30pm. The position requires a valid driver's license and succesful completion of a background check.

The Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) is a diverse organization with over 340 employees serving state agencies and departments within state Government. BGS provides the facilities services required for all state agencies and departments to accomplish their missions. Environmental Factors

Duties are performed at state buildings and may include correctional facilities. Contact with inmates may be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. Plumbing repairs often entail exposure to raw sewage, for which protective clothing must be worn. May require possession of a valid driver's license. Work in all types of weather should be anticipated. May require emergency response to calls outside of regular work hours. Some potential for physical injury may be present.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) or more years of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of a vocational/technical training program in building trades, mechanical repair, industrial arts, or a closely related field.

Special Requirements

Some positions in this class may require a valid driver's license and/or own transportation for travel between work sites.

A criminal record check and/or child abuse registry check may be required for some positions within this class based on the locations where duties are to be performed.
