Description

The duty station for this position is in King County, therefore the incumbent will receive 5%
premium pay in addition to the salary listed above.
In addition to the base salary, incumbents will earn an additional $10 per hour for time spent actively training.

The Opportunity:
The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) is seeking a dynamic leader to train primarily for the Correctional Officers Academy. This position will coordinate and conduct Washington State’s Basic Training Academy programs for our Northeast Regional Campus in Spokane County. Specifically, this position will deliver training curriculum to ensure effective, efficient, and ethical training of all academy students. Duties

Duties assigned to this position include (but are not limited to):

  • Act as a lead TAC Officer of COA classes and facilitate the instruction of classroom, practical, and mock scenarios.
  • Train and mentor students guided by WSCJTC agency values.
  • Maintain order within the academy atmosphere, including motivating classes as a group and students individually.
  • Support and mentor contracted TAC Officers and part-time contractors in leading academy classes.
  • Communicate with student’s employing agencies regarding performance, attendance, coordination of additional training needs, test failures and remedial training.
  • Upon request by, or with the assistance of, the Quality Standards Division, act as a subject matter expert in updating curriculum.
  • Upon request by or with assistance of the Records Manager, act as a subject matter expert in identifying appropriate curriculum documentation for records request responses.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • At least five (5) years of experience in law enforcement in an assignment that may require the application of physical force -OR- At least five (5) years of experience as a trainer of criminal justice personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections) specifically in the areas of de-escalation, patrol tactics, criminal law, criminal procedures, control/defensive tactics, less lethal weapons, firearms, and/or control/defensive tactics.
  • An understanding of adult teaching and learning methods
  • At least two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience of criminal justice personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections). Serving as a lead trainer/primary coach/TAC Officer/ FTO/PTO are acceptable.
  • No sustained use of force complaints in the past three (3) years
  • Any community complaints in the last three (3) years must be satisfactorily explained.
  • Able to model the Guardian Philosophy of policing in class on a daily basis.
  • Strong work ethic, self-directed, and able to work in a team-teaching environment.
  • Ability to support the agency's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.
  • Effective communication skills.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • Understanding of and/or experience with WSCJTC protocols and chain of command.
  • WSCJTC Instructor Development - 2 (ID2) certification.
  • Recent experience with Basic Law Enforcement Academy training.
  • Skills in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with control/defensive tactics, wrestling, mixed martial arts, military combative, and/or Jiu-Jitsu.
  • Less lethal tool certifications: electronic control weapons (ECW), Impact weapon, Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray, projectile impact weapons.
  • Knowledge of WA State purchase and procurement procedures.
  • Public relations or professional communications experience.
