HOUSING IS NOT PROVIDED

Join our team at Chiwawa Fish Hatchery and be our lead worker performing scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties at hatchery facilities and trap sites within a complex!

You will assist with rearing anadromous fish for conservation and fishing opportunities.

Serve as the lead worker at Chiwawa Hatchery and the Wenatchee River Adult Traps.

In this dynamic role,
you will keep supervisor and management well-informed on production issues that may lead to fish health concerns or program shortfalls.

With your experience,
you will project and monitor fish growth and feed requirements.

You thrive on building collaboration and teamwork,
serving as a leader and role model for staff, temporary workers, and volunteers.

We are seeking a candidate
to help the Eastbank Complex to meet hatchery, mitigation, PUD contract obligations, and agency goals.

Duties

Here are some things you will do in this role:

Fish Culture:

  • Carries out sound fish culture practices to meet program goals.
  • Identifies and communicates opportunities to improve fish culture practices.
  • Performs fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants.
  • Collects adult salmonids by trapping.
  • Coordinates on-station and off-site fish planting activities.
Crew Leader:
  • Carries out assignments as a working leader.
  • Monitors projects/activities to ensure completion in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that the staff is productive and well informed on activities.
  • The lead responsible for safety rule compliance, training, documentation and ensures hazards are addressed.
  • Demonstrates, instructs, and trains others in methods on how to complete tasks.
Physical Operation and Maintenance of Facility:
  • Ensures that working components of the fish hatchery are kept in good condition (i.e. pumps & motors, vehicles, alarms, generators, flashlights)
  • Identifies and communicates ways to improve the physical plant operation.
  • Actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate.
  • Maintains facility bio security measures.
  • Monitors water quality, quality rearing environments.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Outside in all weather conditions performing strenuous physical activities, often working alone around water, repetitive throwing motions while hand feeding fish, standing for long periods of time.
    • Office work when required.
    • Must be able to lift 50 pounds of equipment and fish.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • 40 hours per week. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
    • The work hours can vary greatly for this position at different times of the year depending on the work schedule and weather conditions.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel may be required for short periods of time to accomplish agency goals and required training.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Hand and power tools, lawn care equipment, chain saws, snow blowers, tractors, forklifts, egg picking machines, water sampling instruments, small and large fish transport trucks, passenger vehicles, fish pumps, fish counters, CWT identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine powered equipment, ultrasound equipment, PIT Tag detectors, computers, and computer software.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Communicate effectively with public and volunteers.
    • Interact with small community groups and individual constituents on a regular basis.
  • Housing:
    • Housing is not provided for this position.
  • Standby:
    • This position requires standby which means the employee is responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day and must be able to respond to facility in 60 minutes or less.
    • When on standby this position will require the employee to work 10 days and be off 4 days.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.
Or
  • Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology, or closely allied field and two (2) years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
Or
  • Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology, or closely allied field and two (2) years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
Or
  • Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school and two (2) years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
Please note:
  • Four (4) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the Bachelor’s degree.
License:
  • Valid driver’s license.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within 6 months.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have the following:
  • Two- or four-year degree in Fisheries or closely associated field.
