About WSDOT
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a motivated and hard-working individual to join the Roadside Maintenance Crew in Vancouver, WA. The Highway Maintenance Worker 3 will need to be able to hit the ground running and lead an experienced team of Maintenance professionals responsible for performing a variety of highway, roadside, infrastructure, and right-of-way maintenance work to ensure the safe and efficient movement of goods, services, and people. This experienced technician will lead by example and have a personal commitment to safety while coordinating daily work activities such as heavy equipment operations, providing roadway maintenance for sub-sections of highways, and performing snow and ice removal functions.

What to Expect
This position performs work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors, often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic. This position is required to respond to emergency callouts. Occasional standby, call-back, and rotational night shift work may be required.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:


  • Prioritize, plan, schedule, and budget maintenance priorities of State Highways within area of responsibility.
  • Lead, schedule, and direct highway maintenance and Gee Creek safety rest area activities.
  • Prioritize and schedule personnel and equipment.
  • Maintain and submit daily records and reports of maintenance activities.
  • Enter all maintenance activities into computerized systems.
  • Train others in equipment usage, safety, highway maintenance, safety rest areas maintenance and cleaning, and public relations.
  • Complete third-party damage reports and prepare cost estimates.
  • Lead and perform work such as asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair, drainage maintenance including catch basins, erosion and slide repair, sign maintenance and repair, guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair; tree removal; vegetation management; plowing snow and sanding/de-icing roads.
  • Safely provide proper traffic control supervision for all work operations and emergency road closures.
  • Patrol and inspect assigned highway and right of ways, documenting deficiencies of the roadway.
  • Lead crew during winter snow and ice operations.
  • Steward safety programs by knowing and enforcing the established WSDOT/WAC safety policies and procedures; conduct safety meetings.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools.
  • Assist in the safe cleanup and removal of unlawful dwellings.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 or Maintenance Specialist 3, or Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2, or equivalent combination of experience.
  • A valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per the MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging, or ability to obtain Flagger Certification within six (6) months.
  • A Class A CDL with endorsement N without airbrake restrictions.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License (required within twelve months of hire).
  • Experience in communicating to multiple audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience providing outstanding customer service.
  • Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • Experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, and making good decisions in stressful conditions.
  • Experience in working independently and prioritizing workload, with the ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays to respond to emergency call-outs/stand-by or emergency situations.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • Ability to traverse uneven and steep terrain and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Computer skills (such as Microsoft Office Suite Programs including Excel, Word, and Outlook).

Preferred qualifications include:
  • High school graduation, or possession of a GED certificate, or equivalent.
  • Understanding of Transportation Equipment Fund (TEF) owned equipment.
  • Three (3) years of experience in one of the following job classes: Highway Maintenance Worker 2, Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2, or Maintenance Specialist 3.
  • A Plans Reading Certification.
  • One (1) year of experience operating and transporting equipment.
  • Knowledge of surrounding area.
