Duties

The Washington State School for the Blind currently has an opening for a Residential Life Staff position open for the graveyard shift (approximately Monday through Friday: 12:00am-8:00am). This position provides training and guidance to Washington State School for the Blind students for the purpose of facilitating student independence and success by providing Daily Living Skills instruction; supervising meals while assisting and instructing students in food preparation, table setting, and proper manners; and assisting students in personal laundry and light housekeeping as needed. The successful candidate will be scheduled to work during the WA State School for the Blind’s school year under the direction of the Associate Director of Transition and Residential Programs.

This employee may perform the following duties, including but not limited to:


  • Provide safe, professional instruction to and/or supervision of students while ensuring safety at all times (including in the residential setting). Encourage student growth, respect individual student characteristics, and utilize positive behavior management strategies.
  • Assist in programs that meet physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of students (such as assessments, IEP, behavior management and intervention);
  • Incorporate and use principles of orientation and mobility in all aspects of student instruction;
  • Assess situations regarding student behavior; recommend programming, discipline or crisis intervention as needed;
  • Instruct, assist, and monitor blind/low vision students with regard to their daily schedule, independent living and routine duties (such as social skills, home management, hygiene, clothing care, housekeeping, etc.) in an effort to facilitate student self-sufficiency;
  • Assist students with schoolwork and offer general advice as necessary;
  • Plan and participate with students in leisure activities
  • Provide regular communication to supervisor and co-workers regarding student related activities, behaviors and progress;
  • Maintain ongoing communication with parents, staff, community and organizations;
  • Document and maintain student and staff reports, records and communications;
  • May administer medication as directed by nursing care staff. Provide assistance with transportation, supervision, and interact with students during on or off-campus recreational activities or appointments, as necessary;
  • Complete daily reports including shift reports, data tracking sheets, etc.
  • Perform monitoring duties on the long-distance chartered bus runs; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications


  • Valid state ID or driver's license and minimum age of 18;
  • Two years of college with major emphasis in education, child development, or related subject; AND one year of experience working in instructional setting with children; OR equivalent education/experience
  • Basic Microsoft Office software skills;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times;
  • Ability to respond to difficult, stressful or sensitive interpersonal situations in ways that will reduce or minimize potential conflict;
  • Obtain basic Braille competency;
  • Have or have the ability to obtain First Aid/CPR card and Food Handler's card;
  • Willingness and abilities to work with students with physical and developmental disabilities;
  • Must be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time and ability to walk long distances, as necessary;
  • Ability to monitor students on long distance bus trips;
  • Ability to lift or assist students as necessary;
  • Willingness and ability to maintain good working relationships with staff, parents and students;
  • Must pass agency/state and federal background checks;
  • Willingness and ability to work a graveyard shift and cover other shifts as needed.

You will be required to acquire the following certifications;
  • CPR/First Aid (Upon Hire)
  • Food Handlers Card (Upon Hire)
  • Medication Administration training
  • Basic UEB Braille Understanding (Within 1 year)

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working with blind or low vision individuals;
  • Experience working in educational environment;
  • Possess current and valid CDL
  • Certified Lifeguard

** Note: The full salary range has been posted for informational purposes only. New hires without State of Washington agency experience in a similarly situated position typically will not start at the top of the range as these are considered senior/longevity steps. Education/experience will be considered for the proper placement of any final candidate. This position also includes additional 5% assignment pay. This recruitment can be used for multiple positions and shifts.
