Position works five (5) days a week, 8 hours per day. Core working hours are typically 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Wednesday - Sunday. This position requires travel and overnight travel between parks and statewide for meetings, training, and other field work.

The Olympic View Area is recruiting an organized, energetic, team player with Journey level skills in one or more trades to fill this position. The Olympic View Area consists of seven park properties, including Fort Flagler, Fort Worden, Anderson Lake and Fort Townsend. The duty station for this position is at Fort Flagler State Park on Marrowstone Island. Fort Flagler is nearly 1,200 acres with many recreational opportunities and amazing views of the mountain ranges, Puget sound and Port Townsend Bay. The Olympic View area has 22 full time positions and 12 seasonal employees throughout the seven park properties.
The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and communication skills and will be an outstanding team player. An interest in historical preservation as well as an overall interest in learning new skills and a love for a variety in work will best suit this position.
Under the supervision of the Construction & Maintenance Lead, Supervisor, or Park Manager, this position performs advanced skill level work in various trades accomplishing routine, planned, and emergency maintenance, construction, repair, and equipment operation for Fort Flagler State Park and all other parks in the Olympic View Area, and associated park managed facilities and properties.The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and communication skills and will be an outstanding team player. An interest in historical preservation as well as an overall interest in learning new skills and a love for a variety in work will best suit this position.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Responsible for completing preventative and deferred maintenance projects requiring lead and journey level skills.
- Performs journey level work in equipment operations, repair, improvement projects, carpentry, masonry, roofing, plumbing, and electrical trades.
- Maintains, constructs, and remodels buildings, floats, docks, trails infrastructure, and other facilities.
- Proposes, plans (including permitting and budgeting, provides written documents, periodic project review, and quality control.
- Performs construction and maintenance tasks and projects within the parks and facilities managed and permit codes.
- Responds to maintenance related emergencies and urgencies.
- Responsible for heavy equipment operation, transportation, maintenance, and repair as needed.
- Maintain health and safety standards while leading staff.
- Works alone in remote locations.
- Two (2) years as a Maintenance Mechanic 1.
- Four (4) years of advanced level experience in two (2) or more of the construction/building trades to include: building maintenance, repair, remodeling, construction duties, and mechanical/machinery operation.
- High school graduation or GED.
- Valid Washington State unrestricted (except corrective lenses) driver's license.
- First Aid/CPR Certification must be obtained within the first 12 months of employment.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working for Washington State Parks or a similar parks and recreation entity.
- Advanced level experience driving and operating a variety of vehicles and light to heavy equipment.
- Advanced knowledge and experience working with various hand and power tools.
- Intermediate technical knowledge and experience and expertise in construction, installation, and problem-solving issues impacting agency facilities, sites, and systems.
- Beginner skills and experience with the use of Microsoft Office products such as Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Beginner Project Management experience including planning, purchasing, and completion of tasks.
- Experience organizing work projects to include time management, multi-tasking, and communication.
- Knowledge and application of building codes, rules and regulations governing safety, repair, and maintenance and construction of facilities and tasks.
- Work independently while using good judgement and problem-solving skills in decision making.
- Lead lower-level staff.
- Take direction and has an eagerness and adaptability to learn new skills.
- Take initiative and see a project through completion.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Aware and willing to follow safety policies and protocols.
All Construction & Maintenance Specialist are required to wear a uniform. A complete and properly worn uniform helps establish the professional identity of a Construction & Maintenance Specialist and promotes respect as a Washington State Parks employee. All Construction & Maintenance Specialists will receive 6 shirts within the first year (2 shirts per calendar year after the first year), 1 jacket every 3 years, 1 baseball cap every year, 1 safety vest every 3 years, and a clothing stipend of $200 per year, and a $250 boot stipend every 2 years. Uniform stipends are intended to offset the cost of clothing worn in the workplace such as pants, boots, raingear, etc.HOW TO APPLY
