The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Correctional Lieutenant at Airway Heights Corrections Center.
The Department of Corrections, as a partner in the criminal justice system, enhances public safety, administers criminal sanctions and programs in accordance with the law, and provides leadership for the future of corrections in Washington State. The Department consists of the Office of the Secretary, Prisons Division, Community Corrections Division, Administrative Services Division, and Health Services. The Department employs over 7,600 staff and has a biennial budget of approximately $1.6 billion.
AHCC is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The facility is a 2000 bed male facility located approximately 10 miles west of Spokane. The prison consists of a main facility that houses medium and long-term minimum-custody offenders. A separate perimeter adjacent to the main facility accommodates a minimum-security unit for offenders with minimum-custody or lower.

Under the supervision of the Correctional Captain, this position supervises Correctional and support services personnel and is a member of the prison management team.The Department of Corrections, as a partner in the criminal justice system, enhances public safety, administers criminal sanctions and programs in accordance with the law, and provides leadership for the future of corrections in Washington State. The Department consists of the Office of the Secretary, Prisons Division, Community Corrections Division, Administrative Services Division, and Health Services. As the Incident Commander, manage/direct institution emergencies and coordinate response with outside agencies. Maintain security of the institution in accordance with established department methods and procedures (i.e. managing staff, offender accountability, control facility movement, offender programs and work areas).
In accordance with department policy and procedures, notify the Duty Officer of significant events and/or incidents of concern.
Ensure appropriate safety and security measures are followed during transports to safeguard staff, offenders, and the community.
Manage Use of Force situations, utilizing all available resources to include mitigating alternatives such as directing the progressive use of force options.
Ensure compliance with all agency policies, applicable collective bargaining agreements, Merit System Rules, the Revised Code of Washington, Washington Administrative Codes, judicial procedures, Division Directive, Operational Memoranda, and post orders/operations manuals.
Manage the assignment of the workforce by ensuring position requirements are met and by filling posts for all areas of the facility.
Complete all required reporting through the Incident Management Report System (IMRS).
Respond to all emergency grievances filed by offenders during non-business hours.
Required Education, Experience and Job Specific Competencies:
- Graduation from high school or GED;
- Two years of correctional experience in adult, juvenile, law enforcement or related field;
- At least two years of supervisory experience (can be gained concurrently with other required experience);
- Demonstrated skills to communicate clearly, factually, and concisely both orally and in writing, in routine and emergency situations;
- Demonstrate ability to recall detailed information, and maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time;
- Ability to remain calm and acts professionally during all emergent conditions;
- Ability to use de-escalation skills to manage stressful situations that involve abuse or hostility.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of correctional administration.
- AND -
- Three years experience as a Correctional Sergeant in adult corrections.
-OR-
- One year of experience as a Correctional Sergeant with successful completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of accredited college level course work.
