The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an Equipment Technician Lead to support the Olympic Region (OR) Transportation Equipment Fund (TEF). The TEF provides well maintained vehicles and equipment to customers who in turn may accomplish their services to the public in a safe, efficient, timely, and cost-effective manner. Under the supervision of the Equipment Technician Supervisor, this role is responsible for performing a full range of journey-level maintenance and repair activities, diagnostic procedures, and fabrication activities on all types of equipment utilized by the department. This includes heavy (greater than 26,000 GVW) and construction (on- and off-road) vehicles and equipment within the OR area of responsibility. The Preventative Maintenance (PM) and repair functions are the most critical maintenance requirements of this position.

What to Expect
Duties are physical in nature and are completed in an open heavy equipment repair facility. Core hours are from 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies. Must be able to work alternate and emergency shifts as situations dictate; respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Occasional standby and call-back may be required.
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Equipment Technician Lead will:
  • Plan, schedule, and direct operations, maintenance, and repair activities.
  • Instruct employees in operation, servicing, and maintenance of motorized equipment and evaluate workload status and maintenance delays.
  • Coordinate equipment compliance, preparation, repair, and disposal with other Equipment Technician Leads and Supervisor and ensure quality and expertise in equipment repair operations.
  • Analyze vehicle maintenance reports, examine maintenance records, and monitor a motor vehicle preventive maintenance program.
  • Obtain repair estimates and schedule vehicles for repair as necessary; maintain service records on all fleet vehicles, as well as establish pickup, delivery, and hauling schedules.
  • Perform machinist, body and glass repair, and welding fabrication work to brackets, attachments, and specialized equipment attachments.
  • Operate shop equipment such as grinders, vacuum gauge, voltage and regulator tester, wheel balancer, drill press, OBD diagnostic scanner, digital volt meters, computerized diagnostic devices and software, emission testers, and various hand tools and other equipment used in heavy equipment repair.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Three (3) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey level mechanic. NOTE: Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair, including welding, may substitute year for year for up to two (2) years of experience. 
OR 
  • One (1) year of experience as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment. 
OR 
  • Journey-level standing as a heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial mechanic as demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship.
OR
  • Journey-level standing as recognized by a labor union.
 
In addition to the above, the following are also required:
  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Experience leading a team. 
  • Possess and maintain a valid Washington Class A CDL w/N endorsement to operate trucks of 26,000 GVW and above; CDL may be obtained within 6 months of hire date.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness to communicate professionally with diverse audiences.
  • Experience working independently to prioritize workload and handle multiple assignments.
  • Experience utilizing computer software, such as MS Excel, Access, and Word.
  • Experience reading and understanding equipment manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Experience working with man lifts and aerial equipment.
  • Experience diagnosing electrical and mechanical problems of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of gear and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
 
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Currently possess a valid Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions.
  • Experience as an Equipment Technician Lead.
  • Two (2) years’ experience performing journey-level equipment repair.
  • Four (4) years of experience performing preventive maintenance and minor vehicle repair.
  • Two (2) years’ experience diagnosing WSDOT fleet equipment.
  • Experience planning, assigning, reviewing, and checking the work of others.
  • An Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in automotive or light/heavy equipment repair.

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 20% assignment pay.
  • Travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis to attend training, meetings and/or parts pick-up. Operating equipment is necessary to diagnose problems and check repairs.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
