The  Shorelands & Environmental Assistance (SEA) program  within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Riparian Systems Grant Planner (Environmental Planner 4) position.

This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA.
This position is located in our Northwest Region Office (NWRO) in Shoreline, WA.

Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.


Please Note:
 If the final location of this position is determined to be in our Northwest Region Office (NWRO) in Shoreline, WA. there will be an additional 5% pay increase due to its location in King County. In this instance the salary range will be $6195 - $8329 per month. 

 

Would you like to help play a role in salmon recovery in the Puget Sound?

 

This position will be on the forefront of implementing a $30 million EPA grant for innovation in riparian restoration in the Puget Sound basin. As such, you’ll be part of a team helping to determine where investments are made and what activities are funded. You will lead a grant solicitation process with the help of an advisory team. 

 

As part of the Wetlands Section and Shorelands Program, you’ll learn from experts in wetlands, rivers and riparian areas, Puget Sound recovery, and flood management and restoration, as you implement the riparian grant program. You’ll have the opportunity to build relationships across the Puget Sound restoration community and with leaders in salmon recovery.  A collaborative group of professionals comprise the wetlands section. The group emphasizes sharing information and learning. In the wetland section we have our lead wetland scientist, policy lead, local government liaison, mitigation compliance team and wetland mitigation banking team. Our wetland section is growing with new staff having joined the ranks recently. Come join our team!

to create community conservation partnerships to protect and restore our shorelands, wetlands, and floodplains.

 


Please Note: This is a project position that is funded until September 30, 2026. The Funding for this position has a high probability of being extended for an additional four years pending funding.

What makes this role unique? 

You will help lead innovations in riparian restoration through the development and management of a subaward grant process including investment planning, geographic prioritization, and project monitoring. The work includes convening and facilitating a Project Oversight Team with representatives from grant partners and agencies. You’ll oversee implementation of the $30 million Climate Resilient Riparian Systems Lead grant and build relationships with members of the restoration community. 



What you will do: 

  • Manage cooperative agreement with EPA for the Climate Resilient Riparian Systems Lead.
  • Convene and facilitate a Project Oversight Team in the implementation of the riparian cooperative agreement.
  • Serve as liaison with state and federal agencies, local governments, tribes and external stakeholders on implementation of the cooperative agreement.
  • Develop and implement and subaward solicitation for riparian restoration grants.
  • Convene and collaborate with stakeholders, funding partners, subaward cohorts, and agency representatives in conversations around riparian innovation, program sustainability, and leveraged funding.
Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:

  • 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
  • 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Option 1: 

A Bachelor’s degree in land use, urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning, landscape architecture, geography, land use or environmental law, public administration with an environmental emphasis, or closely related field  

AND 

Five years of professional experience in land use, urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning, and/or program development. 



Option 2:

A Master's degree or above with major emphasis in land use, urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning, landscape architecture, geography, land use or environmental law, public administration with an environmental emphasis, or closely related field  

AND 

Three years of professional experience in land use, urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning, and/or program development. 



Option 3:
One (1) year of experience as an Environmental Planner 3, at the Department of Ecology.




Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license


Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of running a grant solicitation and funding program.
  • Experience in project management.
