Job purpose

We are in search of qualified reporters with experience and an interest in covering the local municipalities on a freelance basis. We are building a hyperlocal news website that delivers original, objective, award-winning, community-based news, sports, events, and more. The site is individually owned and operated in Phillipsburg.

Freelance news reporters will work with the owner in covering local news in assigned towns. They will gain significant experience in covering news and events, business profiles, and breaking news.

Expectations

The ideal candidate would be an enthusiastic writer to help us keep up with an area rich in top sports programs and local events and come away with more than just a game story. The person must be excited to keep us ahead of the curve with our online components by embracing social media, including digital and video components.

Additionally, News Reporters are expected to:

• Create a story that accurately informs, entertains, and engages specific audiences and platforms through the use of metrics. You will work toward becoming the community’s leading voice for news
• Strong storyteller that connects with readers in the community through the articles you produce, as well as through our social media platforms
• Collaborates with other local editors and reporters to provide the town with high quality news stories from the surrounding area

Qualifications

Interested candidates must meet the following criteria to be eligible for this position:

• Previous internship or news writing experience preferred.
• Excellent writing, editing, and organizational skills.
• Self-starter who can take direction and contribute ideas for stories
• The ability to work independently on projects while meeting deadlines.
• Photography and video skills are a plus.
• Community development knowledge/experience is a plus.

Job Types: Part-time, Contract, Internship

Pay: From $25.00 per hour
