The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking an Assistant Nurse Manager to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager. 

 

Position Specific Summary:

The Assistant Nurse Manager on Pediatric Intensive Care Unit interfaces with the administrative and clinical nursing staff to provide leadership in improving and maintaining the delivery of care processes for a specific unit and/or patient populations.  The Assistant Nurse Manager assumes delegated responsibility for implementation of daily operations for specific units and/or patient populations.

 

Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday Evening/Nights, flexible to meet unit needs
Location: Stead Family Children’s Hospital (SFCH)
Rotations: Must be flexible to meet unit needs

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Hire or assist in hiring nursing unit staff through effective and timely recommendations
  • Develop and manage the talents, strengths and behaviors of assigned staff as directed by nurse manager
  • Completes staff evaluations, for assigned staff, on time with written, solid justification.
  • Assure staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures and regulations
  • Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts
  • Actively help manage operating expenses for the unit name/ clinic name by monitoring the unit/clinic’s operating budget.
  • Review financial reports and provide insights to budget variances to nurse leaders.
  • Recommend budget ideas, resources and cost containment strategies
  • Collaborate with nurse leaders to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement
  • Implement and maintain standards and quality plans
  • Engage staff in meeting plan goals
  • Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams on the unit
  • Serve as a resource for patient care problems.
  • May provide some patient care
  • Collaborate with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans
  • Communicate with physicians, staff and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic.
  • Communicate with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues
  • Provide evaluative feedback for staff members and health care students
  • Work with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences
  • Support unit evidence based practice research initiatives

 

 

 

Education Required:

  • Baccalaureate in Nursing is required

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire

  • Minimum 2 years current or recent (within the last 12 months) experience in pediatric critical care nursing

  • Certification in Pediatric Critical Care Nursing is required by six months of hire

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, decision making, and critical thinking skills

  • Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs)

  • Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail and thoroughness

  • Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments

  • Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education

  • Demonstrates appreciation for diversity with an understanding of benefits of a diverse workforce (stimulation, challenge, and energy that contributes to a productive and effective workplace)

 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Current experience managing/leading transitions in care

  • Knowledge of UI and UIHC policies, procedures, and regulations

  • Experience working in a large academic medical center

  • Experience working in a union environment

  • PALS instructor certification
