The individual will be an integral team member of the Manufacturing Operations group, to implement “best practices” for STERIS employees. The path forward consistently requires the attainment and sustainment of the STERIS World Class Safety Excellence for all employees.

Position Summary
The Health, Safety, & Environment (HSE) Specialist is responsible for assisting the HSE Manager on the development and implementation of a sustaining HSE management system for the Plymouth, MN manufacturing facility. The individual will be an integral team member of the Manufacturing Operations group, to implement “best practices” for STERIS employees. The path forward consistently requires the attainment and sustainment of the STERIS World Class Safety Excellence for all employees.
Duties
- Assist with the development/improvement, implementation, and maintainence of HSE Management Systems (e.g., policies, procedures, and safe work instructions) that are aligned to the ISO 45001 and 14001 voluntary standards.
- Conduct gap assessments and develop corrective action plans with engagement from relevant operational teams.
- Use lean methodology to drive improvements in HSE programs.
- Work closely with the regional / global HSE and STERIS training teams to facilitate the continuous development, delivery, and assessment of HSE training (delivered in different formats including e-learning, coaching, toolbox talks, classroom-based learning, etc.).
- Support incident management, which includes supporting the local emergency response team and incident reporting & investigation in accordance with STERIS policy.
- Support collection, analysis, and reporting of local HSE performance metrics.
- Support Lean processes in manufacturing operational environment.
- Support relevant teams with the management of hazardous, non-hazardous, and biohazardous waste.
- Participate in effective HSE communication using monthly HSE Committee meetings, internal intranet, newsletters, internal publications and other engagement initiatives to improve employee awareness, competency and safety performance.
- Support the local HSE committee. Use your experience and expertise to coach and empower HSE committee members.
Required Experience
- Bachelor's Degree plus one (1) year of experience working in the health, safety and environment field. OR High School Diploma plus three (3) years of experience working in the health, safety and environment field.
- Must have an understanding of HSE strategies and programs that includes; but is not limited to; injury/illness prevention, hazard communication, emergency response, ergonomics, powered industrial truck safety, machine guarding, lock out/tag out (LOTO), hazardous waste management, and employee on-boarding training.
- Must have understanding of conducting facility audits, inspections.
- Must have experience in giving effective oral presentation to a wide range of audiences ranging from hourly employees to management teams.
- Must have the ability to write clear and concise reports.
- Communication – ability to communicate across functions, professional levels and backgrounds both orally and written
- Reasoning – must be able to evaluate complex employee relations issues and develop rational basis for decision-making that balances employee and company interests.
- Computer Skills – knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint.
- Working knowledge of HSE regulations and a strong background and understanding of behavorial safety concepts is desired.
- Holds certification through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) or qualified to sit for BCSP certification exam is preferred.
- This is an onsite position based in Plymouth, MN.
- The schedule is M-F 9am - 6pm.
