Job Requirements:
- This position is accountable for planning, scheduling, and directing all operations at the associated repair shop to ensure expeditious high-quality repair of tank cars at minimum cost in accordance with the Company’s standard operating procedures and in compliance with all AAR, DOT, and FRA standards to meet our goal of repairing our key customer’s cars as quickly as possible with the highest possible quality, safely, and at the lowest possible cost.
- Development and coaching of personnel in the key areas of lean production (elimination of waste, 5S, point of use material, visual controls, shadow boards, process flow maps), safety (review of procedures, accident investigations, development of safety culture), quality (training and execution of policies and procedures), profitability (reducing costs, maximizing revenue)
- Overall planning of labor resources (hiring and firing), wage rate administration, administration of company absenteeism policy, negotiations with union officials, and grievance issues.
- Ensures all shop operations, including repairs, conversions, linings, etc., are performed in a timely manner.
- Plans and controls all shops costs ensure shop operations are performed cost-effectively.
- Actively implements and trains employees in accordance with the Company’s safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental policies and programs; enforces compliance with published work rules.
- Participates in and actively supports quality projects and activities and responsible care initiatives to ensure that the Company achieves its goals.
- Knowledge and understanding of basic management and accounting principles.
- Ability to communicate through written and verbal means and give instructions clearly and understandably.
- Ability to travel outside of the normal place of work via automobile, train, or commercial airline.
- Ability to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to, safety shoes, safety glasses, and hard hats.
- Ability to enter and walk on top of tank cars without fear of confined spaces or heights.
- This position requires a college degree with 3 – 5 years of previous relevant managerial experience.
- Extensive rail car repair experience, which must include some supervisory responsibilities, can be substituted for a college degree.
