Sterling is the largest manufacturer of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and is now offering a new approach to structural mass timber with a simplified, streamlined and cost-competitive product line. Position Summary:
Responsible for leading, guiding, and continuously improving the day-to-day activities of the machining, finishing, and packaging operations within Sterling's Structural CLT Department. This is a high visibility and challenging position and a key role in the company's primary growth strategy. Safety, product quality, productivity, workforce, and machinery performance are among the critical and key metrics for this position. Core competencies shall include leadership and motivational skills, technical capability, and team orientated problem solving.
Essential Functions:
- On the floor leadership and guidance of machining, finishing, packaging and shipping operations.
- Lead on-boarding for new employees and train all to understand standard work, job safety analysis (JSA's), 5S and visual factory.
- Train, encourage, and challenge existing employees to improve skills and their overall contribution to high quality conversion of products in a safe manner.
- Manage employee schedules including but not limited to approving and tracking time off, absenteeism, and timecards.
- Manage, enforce, and communicate employee relations issues according to company policy. Implement disciplinary notices/write-ups when necessary, involving Operations Manager when appropriate.
- Evaluate employee performance and conduct performance reviews.
- Assist with department staffing needs and staffing decision making, participating in the interview and evaluation.
- Adhere to standard work as the foundation of controlling and continuously improving methods and techniques.
- Maintain and assist with developing safe work practices using JSA's to document, communicate, and train on Safety.
- Guide and develop change-over techniques and practices to achieve world class uptime.
- Assist with the performance of root cause analysis on product or equipment failures and put in place countermeasures to eliminate or minimize future occurrence.
- Work closely, and collaborate with, the Quality Technician to surface problems with methods, techniques, and equipment with the objective of continuously improving our people, processes, and problem-solving techniques.
- Organization of inventory (parts, supplies, tools) and personal tools to ensure optimum efficiency of the work force.
- Work to maintain balanced work content (flow) between departments and operations.
- Assist leadership with the measurement of daily performance and productivity.
- Participates in projects as requested by management.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Highschool graduate, or GED is required.
- Minimum of three (3) years supervising and directing an hourly or production workforce.
- Minimum of three (3) years progressive work experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
- Experience in 5S, Lean Manufacturing, and formalized problem solving preferred.
- Experience operating forklifts and overhead cranes is preferred.
- Exposure to carpentry and CNC machining is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to manage conflict resolution.
- Strong written and oral communication skills. Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish).
