Organizational Profile

Founded in 1938, Stern Grove Festival is an admission-free summer performing arts festival in San Francisco. Now entering its 85th season, the Festival draws 75,000 people during its ten-week series of world class performances in the outdoor setting of Sigmund Stern Grove. Past seasons have included performing artists from around the world, including San Francisco Symphony, Kool & the Gang, Los Lobos, Smokey Robinson, Ziggy Marley, San Francisco Opera, Carlos Santana, Allen Stone, and Janelle Monae.

Reporting Relationships

Reservation Staff are part of the Operations Department on the Reservation Team. Reservation Staff report directly to their Reservation Leader. In addition, Reservation Staff work closely with the Reservation Manager, Assistant Managers, Perimeter, Safety, and House Teams, Security and Medical teams, and other SGFA Staff.

Position Description

The Stern Grove Festival Reservation Staff will assist with activities and services during patron arrival and entry with a goal of creating a positive experience for all audience members. The primary location of their work is on the Perimeter at the Entrances of the venue. Reservation Staff will assist on-site operational needs including general admission, shuttle, and VIP patron processing area set-up and strike, crowd management and control, response to patron requests and concerns, emergency response protocols, and any additional duties that pertain to the smooth functioning of the venue. Reservation Staff may be re-deployed to a new position on the Perimeter, Safety, or Reservation teams as and if needed.

Availability and Commitment

Reservation Staff must be available Sunday, May 22 and every Sunday from June 5 - August 14th, 2022. Reservation Staff are expected to be available for two workshop days prior to the season on May 22 (virtual) and June 5 (on-site) as well as one Saturday shift during the season (dates and times TBD).

Reservation Staff can expect a schedule of between 6 and 12 hours each weekend, averaging eight hours per week over the course of the Season. This includes hours available each Saturday toward infrastructure set-up (scheduling dependent on interest and ability).

General Duties

  • Attend pre-season orientations to learn about the organization's culture, understand the Operations Staff role in producing the Festival, get hands-on experience with equipment, and participate in venue safety drills.
  • Assist in the set-up and breakdown of infrastructure, including tents, tables, barricades, lanes, signage.
  • Use scanning systems and equipment to grant patrons with advance reservations entry into the venue, as part of the overall patron processing during ingress at various venue entrances.
  • Use reservation system and equipment to verify guest reservations by type, and provide designated credentials for entry into the venue.
  • Assist elderly and people with disabilities to verify their reservations at designated entrances.
  • Assist in troubleshooting ticketing issues and working towards resolution, escalating to Reservation Leaders as appropriate.
  • Assist in facilitating on-site guest registration as-available.
  • Provide directions to venue amenities such as Guest Check-In, Shuttle, Entrance Gates, bathrooms, concessions, water, the medical tent, and general orientation.
  • Attend on-site staff meetings and execute tasks under the direction of Reservations Manager and Leaders.

  • Capability and comfort using smart electronic devices (tablet, smartphone) is a must.
  • Excellent communication skills and collaborative work ethic.
  • Capability and comfort being in large crowds of people.
  • Possess the capacity to handle stressful situations with diplomacy and tact.
  • Able to work efficiently in an organized and detailed fashion.
  • Ability to adhere to SGFA policies, protocols and procedures.
  • Able to maintain self-assurance and control during the concert day.
  • Understanding of your own personal limits and ability to articulate those limits to your supervisor.
  • Have a great sense of humor and maintain dedication to SGFA mission.
  • No experience is required but a good attitude, organizational skills and excellent work ethic is a must.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift/carry 50lbs
  • Able to experience periods of extended standing.
  • Able to walk and climb considerable distances, including inclines/declines during the course of a work day.
  • Able to grasp, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects such as barricades, tables, tents.
  • Able to stoop, crouch and kneel while placing signage throughout the Grove.
  • The ability to listen and speak is required. In a typical work day the employee will be interacting with large groups of people and they must be able to hear and clearly express their ideas with spoken words.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Occasionally sound levels may exceed 100 db. All efforts will be made to protect employee’s hearing.

Work Period and Hours

  • Sunday May 22 – Staff required to attend virtual orientation from 2:00pm – 4:30pm
  • Sunday June 5th – Staff required to attend in person orientation from 8:30am – 5:00pm
  • Available one Saturday afternoon from June 11 - August 13, 2022, TBD.
  • Pre and post-season work days available on mutual consent.

Compensation

Starting at $20 and commensurate with experience.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: From $20.00 per hour
