What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cleaner (Part - Time) position at Stony Brook University?
Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. There are no education or experience requirements. Applicants must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor. Applicants must be able to follow and understand simple verbal and/or written instructions in English.
Brief Description of Duties: Cleaners work independently or as part of a work team that performs a wide range of specialized and routine cleaning activities such as stripping and polishing floors, window washing, vacuuming, trash and recycling removal, dusting and cleaning walls, office space, kitchens and common areas, hospital and clean rooms, laboratories, residential facilities, and restrooms. The nature of the cleaning assignments ranges from light, medium, to heavy physical effort. The class is non-supervisory.
The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

- Using hand-operated equipment and detergents, scrubs and cleans all areas of lavatories, such as sinks, urinals, toilets, etc.
- Remove refuse from buildings.
- Picks up and removes hazardous article which may be on floors, furniture and equipment and places them in designated receptacles or in appropriate places. Moves furniture and equipment in connection with cleaning and care functions.
- Uses mops, brushes, detergents, buffers, floor scrubbers, and other cleaning implements to wash floors, corridors, stairs and stairwells, walls, partitions, windows from the inside of buildings, etc.
- Using appropriate equipment such as ladders and scaffolds, replaces light bulbs, dusts and/or washes light fixtures and high places such as ceilings. Interacts appropriately with customers. If further assistance is required, notifies supervisors.
- Using manual and/or mechanical equipment, strips and vacuums and waxes floors and shampoos carpets.
- Using hand-dusting equipment, dusts assigned areas.
- Using designated equipment, polishes wood and metal fixtures and equipment.
- Using manual and/or mechanical equipment, occasionally removes snow and ice on outdoor walkways and staircases.
- Strips the wax from furniture; cleans and polishes furniture.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
