What are the responsibilities and job description for the Domestic Violence Counselor position at STOP?
The Domestic Violence Counselor is primarily responsible for domestic violence counseling and case management services to clients, and providing evaluation and reporting services to client.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides domestic violence assessment, individual and group counseling sessions.
- Performs case management and treatment planning, maintains files and writes appropriate reports for domestic violence clients as the need arises.
- Provides assignments/treatment plans for perpetrators and safety planning with victims.
- Identifies and helps clients overcome negative attitudes an behaviors; and teaches clients how to control the emotions that result in anger/violence and power and control behaviors in relationships.
- Participates in consulting functions with outside providers as appropriate.
- Writes monthly court compliance reports as appropriate and keeps all therapeutic notes on a timely basis.
- Conducts interventions and counseling for significant others in cooperation with a victim advocate when appropriate.
- Participates in treatment consults and in-service training programs as appropriate.
- Exhibits attitudes and behavior consistent with the following criteria: a. Treats each patient with respect; b. Explains that each patient should honestly understand where they are here, what is going on and what they will gain by being here, especially when held accountable; c. Delivers value to each client every time they meet with a client; d. Models integrity and honest in their personal and professional lives.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Accountability
Reports to the Program Manager for all administrative functions, reports to the designated supervisor for all clinical issues.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree (Social Service related) from an accredited institution or equivalent years of experience in the field of human services.
- Meets minimum education standards doe treatment staff in Washington State, per WACC 388.60.0315.
- One years of experience in the field of domestic violence counseling
Allowable Substitutions:
Equivalent combination of education and experience will be evaluated by the Administrator for the comparability.
Licenses/Special Requirements:
- Registered as an Agency Affiliated Counselor in Washington State or certified as a Mental Health Professional.
- Must be free of criminal convictions involving moral turpitude.
- Participate in a minimum of 30 hours training from: An established DV Victim Program; an established DV perpetrator treatment services program or an out of state perpetrator program complying with Washington State standards.
- Must have completed a minimum of 250 hours of combination of supervised direct treatment contact with perpetrators and DV victim advocacy services, at least 125 of these hours in treatment contact with perpetrators.
- Valid Washington State driver's license.
Knowledge, Ability and Skills:
- Knowledge in the field of domestic violence as established by relevant certifying or regulatory bodies. Must meet the standards set forth in WAC 388-60B.
- Knowledge of Washington Administrative Code pertaining to domestic violence perpetrator programs.
- Knowledge of program policies and procedures.
- Ability to plan, organize and direct clinical processes.
- Ability to work day and evening hours, weekends and holidays if necessary.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work under supervision and to cooperate with other personnel, as well as to function effectively on one's own.
- Ability to calm angry and difficult people and mediate disputes.
- Ability to resolve complex problems and make effective decisions.
- Ability to effectively represent the agency and interact will with other agencies, diverse groups, and the public.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
