POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community
through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

The Swim Instructor at the Streator Family YMCA creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe program conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA and the Red Cross swim lesson curriculum. A swim instructor provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students and families in group, private, and semi-private swim lessons. This position functions as a part-time position and hours vary depending on the season.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with Red Cross guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the Y.
  • Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  • Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  • Attends staff meetings and training as scheduled.
  • Follows all Y policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
  • Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.
  • Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 16 years of age.
  • Certifications: CPR, AED, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention and Blood Borne Pathogens. (obtain within 30 days of hire)
  • Certification: Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification. (obtain within 90 days of hire)
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with Red Cross standards.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work is performed in an indoor aquatics environment.
  • Must be able to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: From $14.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 – 15 per week
