The Sultan School District is one of the larger geographical school districts in the Puget Sound area, consisting of approximately 325 square miles. Sultan School District has approximately 2,000 students enrolled K-12.  Students are currently served by two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and an alternative high school; and the Sno-Isle Skills Center, a cooperative vocational technical school.

Located northeast of Seattle (seven miles east of Monroe) or about 20 minutes from the Woodinville area, Sultan is surrounded by a beautiful environmental setting. Our “backyard” is the scenic Skykomish River and Cascade Mountains.  Sultan School District includes the community of Sultan, Startup, and Gold Bar.  Students from Index attend Sultan High School.

Under the supervision and direction of the building principal, the library Paraeducator 1 provides assistance to teachers and students with access to library materials and a library environment that will aid them in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of library resources and invite imaginative and intellectual growth through access to literature. This includes assisting with the purchase of library materials and maintaining an efficient system  to help teachers and students maximize their experience with the library.  This position’s responsibilities are to assist certificated staff with instructional and non-instructional activities for students who seek special services, including tutoring students individually or in small groups, clerical duties, and supervising peer interaction activities for students who are at-risk , and supervising student activities. 

 

Essential Functions:

Depending upon need, the Paraeducator I  performs and assists all or a combination of the following duties:

  • Work in small groups or 1:1 with students identified as needing special education and related services (including communication, coordination, comprehension, social behavior and self-help hygiene, i.e. toileting, diapering, grooming, catheterization, feeding, etc).
  • Tutor students individually or in small groups in a variety of learning activities to promote student understanding of materials presented. May administer and supervise classroom based assessments and individual assessments.
  • Maintains records and data of student progress.
  • Team with the administrator and lead teachers to establish systems that uphold program goals.
  • Conducts appropriate screenings; teams with lead teacher to implement individualized learning plans for each child and the class curriculum.
  • Teams with other staff in implementing individualized educational programs for students.
  • Meet with parents and other staff as needed to provide an appropriate program for students.
  • Demonstrates a working and theoretical knowledge of child development, classroom and behavior management and developmentally appropriate curriculum for students.
  • Communicate with classroom staff concerning individual student progress and needs; adjust methods to meet needs of a wide variety of students; consult with certificated staff concerning remediation or enrichment resources.
  • Prepares, duplicates, collates and distributes materials; operates a variety of office equipment.
  • Monitor student behavior and promote positive social skill development.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with students, staff, parents, and public.
  • Provides back-up, peak load or relief help in school office as assigned; answer phones; assists students, teachers, parents or the public at counters; files materials.
  • Works to support and maintain after school programs.
  • Tutor students individually or in small groups in a variety of learning activities to promote student understanding of materials presented.
  • Maintain records and data for program documentation.
  • Establish a positive classroom environment including discipline procedures, room arrangement, materials, supplies and schedule.
  • Demonstrate a working and theoretical knowledge of child development, classroom and behavior management and developmentally appropriated curriculum for students.
  • Help monitor and supervise student behavior and promote safe, responsible and respectful social skill development.
  • Collaborate with classroom staff concerning individual student progress and needs; adjusts methods to meet needs of a wide variety of students; consult with certificated staff concerning remediation or enrichment resources.
  • Provide first aid to injured or ill students as appropriate.
  • Assists students with interpersonal and personal skills mastery; listens to student confidences and refers problems to teachers, counselors, specialists, administrators or outside agencies as appropriate.

 

MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Experiences frequent interruptions.
  • Required to deal with a wide range of student behaviors, academic abilities, as well as a wide range of physical or emotional disabilities.
  • May occasionally be required to calm distraught, angry or hostile students.
  • Required to adapt to shifting priorities and to re-channel work efforts.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • May be exposed to visual display terminal for extended periods of time.
  • Exposed to infectious diseases carried by students.
  • Exposed to student noise levels.
  • Occasional to frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and seeing.
  • Must be able to see details at close range.
  • May be required to lift and position students.
  • May be required to be on feet for extended periods of time or sit for extended periods of time.

 

POSITION MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must like working with students of all abilities.
  • Ability to remain flexible and positive when experiencing changes or disruptions of routines.
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills in communicating effectively with students, staff, and the public in a warm and confident manner.
  • Ability to proficiently operate a computer for a wide variety of tasks including the operation of specific software programs for clerical tasks and record keeping.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to learn the operation of general office machines and book repair equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities of basic subject areas, such as reading, writing and math.
  • Display good organizational skills.
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to learn and use effective behavior management techniques.
  • Ability to learn and use effective instructional techniques.
  • Knowledge of student safety rules and procedures.
  • Ability to remain flexible to changes in assignments.
  • Ability to organize activities.
  • Ability to effectively establish constructive, cooperative and positive working relationships with students and staff and maintain them over time.
  • Ability to give and follow directions.

 

EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, FORMAL TRAINING:

  • High school graduation or equivalent and experience working with school-aged students.
  • Pass Paraeducator Praxis test or have 72 quarter credits at 100-level or above.
  • Must have current First Aid / CPR Certification.
  • Following hire, must complete 28 hours of the Fundamental Course of Study within PESB required timelines..
