Summary/Objective
The Regional Special Education (SPED) Director will be responsible for the implementation of special education policies and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, overseeing building staff compliance with all federal, state, and local special education rules and regulations. Duties include training school staff on special education-related topics, monitoring compliance, and providing assistance as needed with special education paperwork. Attending and assisting in special education audits will be necessary. The Regional SPED Director is responsible for the ‘bigger picture’ of service, especially for, but not limited to, students receiving services via Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Duties also include providing guidance to building staff on student interventions (academic and behavioral), discipline of students with disabilities, and compliance.
Essential Functions
- Implementation of IEPs and compliance with IDEA rules and regulations
- Attend necessary trainings, informational meetings, and in-services related to changes in SPED rules, regulations, policy, or procedures
- Provide system-wide training for all building-level staff regarding policy and procedure changes necessary to comply with IDEA and ODE guidelines
- Service Development
- Assist in the development of differentiated services to address student needs
- Services developed include, but are not limited to:
- General/Adaptive behavior
- Reading dysfunction
- Poor academic performance
- Speech/Motor delays
- Transition services
- Consult with Speech/Language Services providers and Occupational Therapy providers to ensure integrated, developmentally appropriate model of service is provided
- Identify, supervise, and train SPED leadership staff
- Review staffing needs at existing schools and consult with Building Director/Principal and Regional Director to identify openings
- Provide consultation and supervision to address concerns regarding provision of services and ensure ongoing provision of high-quality services

- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field
- Familiarity with Special Education policies and regulations of the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), of the United States Department of Education [including Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and No Child Left Behind], and of Summit Academy Management (SAM)
- Ability to become familiar with instructional methods and materials that would be applicable to SAM students
- A clear record as determined by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigations and the Federal Bureau of Investigation
- Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field
- Licensure as an Intervention Specialist
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in Special Education Administration
