The Systems Integration Engineer (SIE) Position
Sunnova is currently looking for an exceptional Systems Integration Engineer (SIE) that will drive engineering excellence across Sunnova Commercial, Industrial (C&I) and Community Microgrid projects. Sunnova seeks an experienced, confident engineer that has a strong power systems background and understands the interoperability between PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and traditional generation sources. The SIE is considered the key technical resource and Subject Matter Expert (SME) responsible for understanding and deploying integrated Distributed Energy resources (DER) solutions for the C&I and Microgrid initiatives. This role is responsible for the development of the architecture and integration strategy around the various hardware and communication technologies and employing engineering standardization across the business. This role will work closely with our internal Sunnova stakeholders and technology partners to identify and specify technology and systems to ensure a safe and reliable, fully integrated solution to customers. The SIE should have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and exercise excellent time-management, with a structured approach to workload, a high attention to detail, and strong analytical skills.
Systems Integration Engineer Responsibilities
- Works closely with the Sr. Engineering Project Manager to develop and execute the strategic vision for integrated systems of DER technology, software, and communications for various C&I and Microgrid systems.
- Develops the technology roadmap for integrated systems for C&I and Microgrids by collaborating with internal organizations and technology partners.
- Prepares Functional Design Specifications, operational narratives, and system philosophies for various integrated system architectures.
- Designs system automation control for PV, Battery Energy Storage System, and traditional generators.
- Writes and reviews Factory Acceptance Test requirements, Site Acceptance Test requirements, and Commissioning Plan for fully integrated systems.
- Contributes to standardization with the design processes, procedures, and the use of computer aided design (CAD) software applications to ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency in the system design process.
- Provides application engineering support to the commercial teams and guides them to technical solutions for prospective projects.
- Develops standardization around communication and data flow for reliable monitoring and control for operations and enterprise monitoring.
- Provides technical and engineering training for various technical disciplines within other business functions.
- Performs a hands-on programming, integrating, commissioning, and testing of integrated solutions.
- Presents architecture decisions and new technology designs/recommendations to leadership for review and approvals.
- Participates in industry conferences and tradeshows to stay abreast on the latest C&I and Microgrid technologies.
Required Qualifications
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited school
- PE License or ability to obtain
- Minimum of 5 years’ renewable experience with and deep understanding of commercial solar, power conversion systems, energy storage, energy management systems and microgrid controllers. Diesel and gas generation control strategies a plus.
- Demonstrated experience in power systems engineering, power controls and commercial & industrial electrical distribution systems, primarily MV/LV distribution systems up-to 15 kV.
- Should be capable for reviewing, understanding interconnection protection, islanding protection requirements as related to microgrids.
- Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP, CAN bus, IEC 61850, DNP3 and others.
- Knowledge of PLC programing using structured text, ladder logic for function block diagrams in accordance with IEC 61121 a plus.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Efficient time management – handle multiple projects simultaneously and with minimal supervision, including prioritizing, organizing, and planning effectively achieve outcomes.

- Experience in effectively communicating technical matters clearly and concisely, both orally and in written reports.
- Demonstrated project management ability to initiate and drive projects and program from idea to completion.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity in an early product and process development environment.
- Ability to travel up to 15%, 5-10% travel expected

- Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
