The James M. Milne Library at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oneonta invites applications for the dynamic position of Reference and Instruction Librarian. The twelve-month, tenure-track librarian reports to the Head of Reference and Instruction and holds the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian.

Milne Library employs 27 full-time staff members and our goal is to support learning and scholarship through the collection, curation, preservation and sharing of knowledge. Your James M. Duties include but are not limited to: providing research, reference and information literacy instruction services and programs to the SUNY Oneonta academic community in a user-centered library that offers comprehensive scholarly collections, a variety of information services, and world-class study and research facilities. The initial appointment will be for two years.

To meet tenure-track requirements, the successful candidate will perform effectively as a librarian, serve on library and campus committees, make scholarly contributions to the field, and pursue ongoing professional development. Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the library's information literacy instruction program by providing on-demand, course integrated information literacy instruction sessions, credit courses, and other academic engagement.
  • Provides in-person, online, and phone reference service and research consultations with students and faculty including staffing a reference desk.
  • Designs, develops, and produces learning objects and instructional materials in various formats including Libguides, online tutorials, and training materials to meet a variety of student needs for use in in-person, online, and hybrid learning environments.
  • Provides liaison outreach and support to academic departments as assigned to ensure collections and services meet faculty and student needs.
  • Collaborates with other librarians in the creation, implementation, and assessment of learning outcomes, objectives and competencies for information literacy and student learning across campus.
  • Engages and participates in ongoing assessment of student learning, library collections, and services.
  • Stays abreast of current developments in academic instructional and reference services.
  • Serves on the library's operational teams and other collaborative groups.
  • Provides service to the library, the University, and the profession.
  • Engages in scholarly and professional development activities.

Job Requirements:


Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in library or information sciences from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent credential) at the time of employment
  • Evidence of effective communication skills, including but not limited to demonstration through application materials
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information literacy as shown in previous experience or course work
  • Teaching experience
  • Evidence of working collaboratively with others (such as committee work, teamwork, group projects, volunteer work, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an academic library or academic setting
  • Experience with multiple learning modalities
  • Experience managing projects
  • Experience working with diverse populations and/or teaching pedagogies and/or multicultural teaching experience
  • Spanish language proficiency
  • Background in Natural or Physical sciences
