We are looking for a motived, mid-level Cultural Resource Specialist to join our growing team! Location flexible within Southern California. This is an hourly, on-call position with full-time potential. In this position, you’ll provide cultural resources support on a variety of projects. Responsibilities will include both office and field-based functions, including conducting records searches, desktop constraints analyses, monitoring construction projects, surveying to identify cultural resources, providing cultural resources awareness and response training to construction crews, and reporting associated with these various tasks.
Depending on qualifications and experience, this position generally performs work under supervision/guidance of more senior staff supporting both routine and complex projects. This position may support some initiatives/special projects as assigned.
Daily travel will be required, with periodic weekend and long hours. Some overnight travel will be required.
Essential Functions
- Conduct records searches
- Conduct desktop cultural resources constraints analyses
- Travel to/from job sites
- Provide cultural resource training to construction crews.
- Perform onsite cultural resources monitoring
- Conduct surveys to identify cultural resources
- Record archaeological and built environment resources
- Complete reporting documentation
- Support special projects as assigned
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Must be able to:
- move or carry job related objects or materials up to 25 lbs
- stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and balance for the purpose of performing inspections
- walk/hike several miles on uneven terrain, sometimes up/down slopes. May need to cross waterways of unknown depth
- work in all weather conditions, including heat and rainy weather
- drive to/from jobs sites, sometimes spending most of the workday driving
Work is typically performed in both an office environment and outside. Related occupational hazards include: heat, cold, odors, smoke, wetness, dusts, noise, and machinery. May be exposed to ticks, wildlife, and COVID-19. Valley Fever may be present in the soil at some job sites. Will occasionally need to stay in a hotel. Will need to work with or talk to various project or site personnel.
Qualifications:
- BS or BA degree in Anthropology with emphasis in archaeology and/or cultural resources management with direct application to current job responsibilities
- At least 4 years relevant experience
- Strong knowledge of relevant historic preservation laws, regulations, and in particular the Section 106 compliance process as it applies to undertakings and management of historic properties
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in applicable field
- Some technical and professional writing experience
