                                   School-Based Mental Health Clinician

 

General Definition of Work
Through leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, School-Based Mental Health Therapists
provide treatment and preventive services by implementing a comprehensive school-based
mental health program addressing student mental health needs and improving school climate.


Education and Experience Qualifications
? Minimum Bachelor’s degree, with at least one-year internship providing student services
    with behavior/social emotional/mental health needs in a variety of instructional settings.
? NCDPI Educator's License or eligibility for such license in School Social Work, School
    Psychology, Counseling, or Special Education.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
? Extensive knowledge of human behavior, social systems, and social work skills.
? General knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
? Skill in counseling, motivating students, and talking with parents.
? Ability to prepare, read and comprehend a variety of job-related forms, reports,
    spreadsheets, plans, records, documentation, and correspondence.
? Ability to speak to individuals or groups with poise, voice control, and confidence.
? Ability to respond adequately to inquiries or complaints.
? Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect
    data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
? Ability to manage culturally sensitive topics.
? Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics and to develop
    meaningful reports for that information, and to keep in confidence all personal or student
    records and information.
? Ability to perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress, and adapt when
    confronted with emergency situations.
? Ability to maintain proper professional conduct.


Essential Functions
? Provides small-group and individual counseling sessions or interventions to students in
    grades PreK-Grade 12 identified as needing mental health, behavioral, or social-
    emotional interventions.
? Develops and manages a comprehensive school-based mental health program to meet
    school needs based on NC standards and current individual school data.
? Incorporates school-based, universal social-emotional learning into student services.

? Recognizes and responds to behavioral health issues to enable students to remain in
    supportive environments and support successful development.
? Provides Tier 2 and Tier 3 students with intensive counseling services, individually and
    in small groups, within the school setting for specifically identified needs.
? Counsels with parents individually and in small groups.
? Assists schools in adopting evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies that
    address student needs.
? Analyzes and interprets student academic data (EOG, EOC, course selection, etc.).
? Provides training to educators to include Tier 2 and Tier 3 behaviors and mental health.
? Coordinates prevention activities with the behavior support team, staff, and partners for
    student engagement and empowerment.
? Provides technical support to schools on mental health services and programming
    concerns.
? Conducts scheduled and spontaneous discussions with teachers, administrators, parents,
    and outside agency personnel.
? Advocates for students, parents, and staff.
? Responds to and stabilizes crisis situations on an individual and school-wide basis.
? Consults and collaborates with other student support service personnel (nurses, school
    resource officers, social workers, psychologists, etc.).
? Attends weekly Behavior Support Team meetings.
? Actively participates in the school MTSS process to assist at-risk students.
? Participates in SBMH professional development opportunities.
? Performs other duties as deemed appropriate and assigned.
