About the opportunity

The Cultural Resources Team Lead in Reno, NV and Northern California region is responsible for providing leadership within the Cultural and Paleontological Resources Program by managing clients, projects, and staff, for the Sacramento office within SWCA’s Northern California region. The Cultural Resources Team Lead will develop new business, manage large-scale projects, meet financial goals, and mentor others to do the same. The successful candidate will have a depth of experience and familiarity with the business environment and cultural resources of Nothern California.

 

This is a full time, regular status, salaried position reporting to the Northern California Cultural Resources Director. This position will work closely with the Cultural Resources leaders across California, Arizona, Nevada, and beyond, to accomplish goals.

What you will accomplish

The Cultural Resources Team Lead will develop business opportunities within the Northern California market and adjacent areas while growing and managing a locally based cultural resources team. This will include working with the Northern California Cultural Resources Director and professional staff throughout the West region to further our team and regional goals by contributing to the following:

 

Client leadership

  • Manage client relationships and conduct business development with new and existing clients.
  • Identify and evaluate sales opportunities (prospects and proposals) and make recommendations to the Directors; lead proposal efforts.
  • Network within industry organizations to expand the regional client base in line with the region’s strategic goals.
  • Develop and foster teaming relationships that lead to business development.
  • Take a leading role in the effort to diversify sales in the Northern, CA markets, specifically by developing business in the cultural resources discipline, also contributing to natural resource, restoration, and multi-region and multidisciplinary pursuits.
  • Participate in and lead strategic client capture efforts, in collaboration with Business Development Resources team and local/regional leadership.
  • Manage the performance of individual projects and effectively coordinate with clients and agencies to produce technically excellent work that is on time and on budget.
  • Identify and mitigate project challenges to avoid overruns and ensure profitability.

People Leadership

  • Supervise, mentor, and provide project-specific direction to cultural resources project managers, technical staff, and field personnel.

  • Advise the Director on staff supervision, advancement, and course correction, as needed.
  • Provide general support to the team relating to safety, equipment, subject matter resources, training opportunities, regulatory and research updates, etc.
  • Take a leading role in managing the schedule for the cultural resources group, ensuring adequate coverage of project needs and appropriate assignments of staff to specific tasks, and identifying staffing shortfalls so that additional support can be sought either through subconsultants, staff from other offices, or hiring.
  • Serve as the lead hiring manager for project- and staff-level positions. Take a leading role in identify staffing needs, screening job candidates, conducting interviews, and making hiring recommendations to the Director.
  • Ensure team compliance with performance management and training requirements; support Director in tracking progress and follow-up with individual supervisors and staff members.

Technical Leadership

  • Direct field and laboratory teams, in coordination with project managers, assistant project managers, and principal investigator, and prepare and review cultural resources reports and other related documents, providing direction and quality assurance.
  • Develop recommendations for mitigation measures, monitoring, and permitting specific to cultural resources.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s (B.A. or B.S.) degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of progressively more responsible experience in cultural resources fieldwork, consulting, and project management, including developing and implementing budgets, schedules, and scopes of work from pre-field tasks to final report preparation.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of related experience on project(s) in California.
  • Previous experience with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations in California is required, including Section 106 of the NHPA, NEPA, NAGPRA, ARPA, CEQA, and California Public Resources Code.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising, mentoring, and providing leadership for other professionals.
  • Demonstrated business development success and consulting acumen, including established credibility with federal and state reviewing agencies and clients, as well as success in proposal writing.

Preferred or Helpful Qualifications: 

  • Graduate degree in a related field
  • Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective manner.
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, and ability to try new, improved techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

An employee in this Reno, NV-based position can expect a salary of $75,400-$98,280/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.  Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
