Job Summary:
Responsible for the definition, creation, and maintenance of the enterprise's data model. Manage and maintain all production and non-production databases. Support multiple services and multiple databases of medium to high complexity with multiple concurrent users, ensuring control, integrity, and accessibility of data. Analyze, test, and implement physical database design supporting various business applications to include: base definition, structure, documentation, long-range requirements, and operational guidelines. Ensure data recovery, maintenance, data integrity, and space requirements for physical database are met through the formulation and monitoring of policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for standards and design of physical data storage, maintenance, access and security administration. Define data repository requirements, data dictionaries and warehousing requirements.
  • Provide first-level application support; resolve problems and answer questions related to the Database Management System (DBMS) and platform environment; contact vendor support when necessary; facilitate application development and client problem resolution with optimum speed and efficiency.
  • Provide Database Management System performance monitoring and tuning. Closely monitor performance; identify problems and implement solutions; ensure the database is running at optimum speed and efficiency. Optimize database access and allocate and/or re-allocate database resources for optimum configuration, database performance and cost.
  • Perform backup and recovery on Database Management Systems. Respond quickly to refresh data; verify implementation of correct backup strategy; develop recovery procedures; support recovery from loss of data caused by user or system error.
  • Install and upgrade the Database Management System and related products. Keep Database Management System at current release and maintenance levels; install supporting products; provide current, stable production and development environments.
  • Reorganize database structures as needed. Automate procedures at regular intervals; use tools to reorganize or defragment database table spaces, tables, and indexes; provide efficient database environment to maximize productivity and improve performance.
  • Perform application refreshes. Refresh data from one environment to another at the request of the application owner; execute necessary task to accomplish this, including export, drop, create, and import prescheduled time to minimize impact; provide application development team optimum development environment with current data.
  • Provide assistance in database design. Research and recommend optimal design criteria; publish standards and work with development staff; standardize environment and improve efficiency. Configure database parameters; prototype designs against logical data models.
  • Oversee capacity planning and reporting. Monitor file system space, database allocation, etc.. Verify efficient use of disk storage; reclaim dead space; optimize space allocation and avoid out-of-space conditions.
  • Be responsible for application-oriented database administration and technical support for the various development, training, testing, and production requirements of relational database environments; focus on application-specific database issues; ensure optimal application performance and integrity.
  • Manage the implementation and use of Database Management Systems. Develop rules, procedures, and standards for the access and maintenance of shared data resources.
  • Review the overall physical database structure for data integrity, performance quality, recoverability, maintenance, and space requirement considerations. Responsible for the integrity of production, test, and quality assurance database environments.
  • Participate in the evaluation and recommendation of DAB tools and new DBMS technologies. May serve as a liaison to database platform vendors.
  • Work on multiple projects as a project leader or sometimes as a project advisor. Communicate complex technical information in a concise and articulate manner.
  • Each team member is expected to be aware of risk within their functional area. This includes observing all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their role. Additionally, they should raise and report known or suspected violations to the appropriate Company authority in a timely fashion.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum Experience: Three (3) years of experience working with various database management systems in database design, testing, implementation, maintenance and administration in a multiple platform environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Thorough understanding of the relational database model and solid theoretical knowledge of relational database techniques.
  • Proficiency in the concepts and practice of database normalization techniques.
  • Proficiency in several DBMS tools and utilities to support such activities as monitoring, database migration, DELL management, and replication.
  • Working knowledge of database concepts/design/development, recovery techniques, performance monitoring and tuning, Structure Query Language, relational database design techniques, and JCL.
  • Knowledge of server development.
  • Full knowledge of SQL, including programming and ways to optimize SQL code, and solid programming knowledge of more than one language.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to establish and maintain a high level of user trust and confidence in the IT group's knowledge of and concern for the business needs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with persons from all levels within the company.
  • Strong interpersonal skills at all levels of management and the ability to motivate employee/teams to apply skills and techniques to solve dynamic problems; excellent team work skills.
  • Solid project management skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple small to large projects in a cross-functional environment.
  • Ability to write clear proposals and technical documents.
  • Ability to see the big picture and conceptualize and document creative solutions.


Preferred:
  • Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA)
