Job Description
SUMMARY: Responsible for total machine designs from individual components to complete assemblies. Work with teams, or individually, on R&D development projects and/or product systems from inception through design, redesigns or modifications, testing, documentation and final release. Responsible for reliable machine designs that meet customers’ expectations of performance. Responsible for providing technical assistance in the fabrication, assembly, and testing of assemblies and machines from customer order to customer acceptance.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND RESPOSIBILITIES:
Analyzes product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine the correct design method and process.
Design equipment based on customer specifications and performance requirements for engineered-to-order custom equipment.
Ensures correctness of proportions, consideration of stresses, speeds, weights, and other related design criteria including the specification of commercial components.
Perform load calculations for sizing servo-drive and pneumatic-actuator components.
Works closely with Electrical Engineers to ensure electrical / mechanical interfaces are correct and accounted for.
Utilizes knowledge of design for manufacturing in optimization of components and subsystems.
Creates Engineering BOMs, assembly drawings and detail drawings as necessary.
Responsible for innovative machine design in SolidWorks (80% of time).
Prepares design layouts and assists with the preparation of engineering estimates.
Creates engineering documentation, including Product Specifications and testing procedures, maintenance intervals and quality control directives.
Maintain compliance with Syntegon company policies, quality standards and industry safety standards
Designs prototype mechanisms and Proof of Principle (PoP) test assemblies for validation, as needed
Evaluates engineering data and test results to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
Confers with management, subject matter experts (SMEs), field service technicians, and engineering personnel to implement design modifications as required.
Provides technical information and guidance concerning manufacturing, materials, and process advantages and limitations.
Promotes teamwork and cooperation between areas of responsibility and other departments.
Applies feedback from company departments to continuously improve designs and engineering workflow.
Responsible for on-time and on-budget completion of all projects assigned.
Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
Interface with customer service to address mechanical technical issues that arise in the field
Reviews documentation for parts and assemblies, ensuring that all prints reflect the item as built and delivered to customer. Ensures all electronic databases are updated and accurate.
Maintain a team environment with a focus on standards and collaboration.
Carries out additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience
Must possess a BS degree in an Engineering discipline
Minimum 5 years of experience in designing custom packaging machines
Must have 5 years of experience using SolidWorks
Skills and Knowledge
Has a successful and well-established track record in coordinating large, complex orders or major redesigns of equipment.
Demonstrates excellence in thoroughness of engineering work, design creativity and product innovation.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated team player.
Customer service orientation.
Demonstrated strong understanding of quality assurance concepts, criteria, methods, etc.
Has demonstrated extensive breadth and depth of knowledge of multiple machine lines.

Possesses knowledge of up and downstream process and equipment; application of peripheral equipment; installation, startup, and performance test experience.

Electro-mechanical machine design experience using applied servo motion control
