ABOUT OUR DISTRICT:

The Syracuse City School District is continuing a standard of excellence in innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. For Syracuse, all means all - including students who fall behind or have been considered "hard to serve" for a host of reasons. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and he is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of school leaders and teachers to partner with him in moving the district toward its goals. The Syracuse City School District represents 34 schools and 4 alternative education programs, serving 21,000 students Pre-K-12 of whom 77% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 18% are served by the Office of Special Education and 78% are students of color.

OVERVIEW:

The SCSD has a Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school focused on three career academies and fourteen pathways. The Public Service Leadership Academy, was phased in at the Fowler High School campus starting with 9th grade students entering in the 2014-15 school year. Students have the opportunity for mentorships, internships and job shadowing in a range of fields. Through the rigorous academic program at the Public Service Leadership Academy, students will develop the self-discipline that will help them thrive in college and careers and will make them community leaders in Syracuse and beyond. The school has a First Responder Academy, Homeland Security Academy, and an Entrepreneurial Academy. Each Academy has specific pathways for students and each Academy has a higher education partner and/or an industry/agency partner. Partners include: Bryant and Stratton College, I.B.E.W, National Grid, Onondaga Community College, Rural/Metro, Say Yes To Education, Mohawk Valley Community College, Upstate University Hospital, SRC, Inc., SUNY ESF, Syracuse Police Department and Syracuse Fire Department.

Our IDEAL Candidate will SPECIFICALLY:
  • Report to the building Principal and will work with the Career and Technical Education Administrative team.
  • Deliver performance-based objectives and outlines for course of study following NYSED curriculum guidelines and requirements.
  • Organize practical and technical instruction, including demonstrations of skills required in the electrical technology professions, lectures in theory, techniques, and terminology.
  • Willingly seek approval to teach concurrent enrollment/college-level coursework.
  • Instruct students in the subject area, considering ethical approaches to electrical technology.
  • Reinforce a high level of integrity with students as they acquire electrical technology specific skills.
  • Present subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods and techniques, such as lectures, discussions, demonstrations and/or active lab activities.
  • Be willing to invite industry professionals to engage and support the program consistently and on a variety of levels.
  • Assist students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning objectives.
  • Enforce classroom protocols, safety rules, and expectations; maintain classroom discipline; utilize effective classroom management techniques.
  • Attend meetings and trainings per requirements of school Principal and the school district.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Work effectively with students, peers, parents and within the community.
  • Ensure all students have a minimum of 60 hours of authentic work-based-learning experiences.
  • Will be a role model and will actively teach students how to behave professionally on a daily basis.
  • Update and maintain an industry relevant Employability Profiles.
  • Select a NYS approved Technical Assessment and be responsible for administering and recording assessment data.
  • Ensure SCSD CTE students create a portfolio that is in alignment with NYS requirements.
  • Chair advisory committee meetings, actively engage in the CTE re-approval process and maintain solid relationships with post-secondary and industry partners.
  • Engage positively in professional development in regard to a variety of effective pedagogy practices.


Essential Responsibilities

The Electrical Technology Teacher will work hands-on, alongside students to help build and deliver the school's electrical technology program through:
  • Teaching electrical technology operations courses to students in a hands-on and dynamic manner;
  • Delivering established course curriculum and exercises based on program requirements;
  • Maintaining and updating existing course material and exercises based on changes in technology, methodologies, and/or changing students' needs;
  • Researching current trends in electrical technology to identify areas for new course development or improvement;
  • Providing assessments of student proficiency and improvement;

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 2-5 years of demonstrated success in electrical technology (preferred).
  • Strong communication skills, and ability to function in a fast-paced student-centered environment.
  • Meet requirements to qualify for and then earn a "Transitional A" teacher certificate from the New York State Education Department, which permits the employment of an individual in a specific career and technical education title who does not meet the requirements for a standard certificate but possesses the requisite occupational experience. SALARY/SALARY RANGE:
  • The current starting salary for SCSD Teachers is $53,000. With proof of outside related experience and college transcripts, the salary will be increased pursuant to the Unit 1 contractual agreement.
