Job Description
The Office of Research Development is a unit of the Office of Research. The Office of Research is the central hub for research support at Syracuse University, facilitating excellence in research, scholarship, innovation, and creative activity that addresses emerging opportunities and societal needs. This support extends to faculty, staff, students, and external partners. Designated as a Research 1 institution, Syracuse University was awarded a total of $106.8 million of sponsored funding in fiscal year 2022.The Office of Research Development (ORD) supports campus-wide programs for fostering faculty research development and new interdisciplinary research initiatives. ORD works closely with other Office of Research Units: the Office of Sponsored Programs; the Office of Research Integrity and Protections; the Office of Technology Transfer; and the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. ORD also coordinates with other institutional units that support sponsored funding, such as the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations, interdisciplinary research centers, and the Deans Offices of each School and College at Syracuse University.
The Assistant Director of Research Development will advance the research mission of the Syracuse University by assisting in the development of proposals, by enhancing faculty research development, and by participating in strategic efforts to increase the research profile of the University.
The Assistant Director will work with faculty and research staff across campus to support externally sponsored proposals and to aid faculty on seeking funding in the STEM fields. Major activities include: facilitating and providing relevant services for the development of external proposal applications; identifying and circulating relevant funding opportunities; assisting with grant development training; and actively monitoring the federal funding landscape to identify new areas of opportunity. The Assistant Director will also work on additional projects as demanded in other areas of research support.

Qualifications
- Advanced degree in STEM field required and two (2 ) plus years relevant research development experience preferred.
- Candidates with a Bachelor’s and four (4 ) plus years direct experience in research development at an accredited institution will be considered.
Job Specific Qualifications
- Outstanding writing, editing, speaking, and proposal development skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work independently with a variety of individuals and a demonstrated ability to build consensus.
- Proven track record in successful facilitation of research proposals.
- Knowledge of funding programs, including expertise in analyzing and applying federal and non-federal regulations and guidelines is required.
- Knowledge of extramural funding programs within the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, and National Institutes of Health is highly desired.
- Knowledge and experience working across multiple academic departments is required.
Responsibilities
- Aid researchers in proposal preparation, pre-submission internal and external reviews, and submission coordination for proposals. Includes working closely with faculty members and other key stakeholders to make recommendations for proposal development strategies and improvements to ensure competitiveness and fit with sponsor requirements. Review proposals for consistency with the goals of the Request for Proposals (RFP). Perform careful edits of proposals to enhance the communication of ideas. Support the development of non-technical supplementary materials. Maintain consistent partnerships, networks, and alliances between and among faculty to enhance institutional research competitiveness and to catalyze new scholarly and institutional collaborations.
- In conjunction with units across campus and the ORD senior staff, assist in the design and delivery of educational workshops and in-service trainings for faculty and research staff. Trainings will seek to refine proposal-writing, broader impact development, funding searches, and other research development skills. A subset of programs will support training for federal funder career programs aimed at early career faculty.
- Actively search, identify, and disseminate funding opportunities applicable to researchers at the University. Facilitate funding strategy sessions with researchers. Proactively search for funding opportunities relevant to new initiatives.
- Assist with the management of intramural grant programs from the Office of Research Development.
- Other duties as assigned.
