Summary

Responsible for the development and coordination of all athletic training activities as they pertain to local High School Athletic Programs and Local Sporting Events. This position has administrative and community outreach responsibilities as well as a variety of clinical functions in the orthopedic medical office in support and care of patients requiring orthopedic care in an outpatient medical setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides injury management and other health services for all high school athletes, assisting coaches with the development and implementation of injury prevention programs.
  • Provides coverage at home events and practices, as scheduled with the athletic director, from the beginning of fall sports season though the conclusion of the spring season.
  • Implements communication plan with athletic directors and coaches including Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) schedule and availability for training room, practices, and games.
  • Serves as liaison between the team physician, the athlete, the athlete’s parents, and coaching staff.
  • Makes clinical decisions by evaluating injuries and illnesses, creating and implementing treatment programs utilizing therapeutic interventions, such as: rest, ice, compression, bracing, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, cold/heat and hydrotherapy as needed or prescribed with the availability of modalities. Refers to a physician or specialist when indicated.
  • Makes clinical decisions regarding patient care by providing injury management for both acute and chronic, from mild to severe musculoskeletal injuries, and other health services for athletes.
  • Serves as consultant to coaching staff on conditioning, nutrition, and protective equipment.
  • Assists with prevention of injuries including education for athletes and coaches, including ImPACT testing, identifying factors that put athletes “at risk”, treating deficiencies in athletes as deemed necessary, as well as taping and bracing.
  • Implements injury prevention program pre-season to identify athletes “at risk for injury”.
  • Participates in community outreach and education regarding injury prevention.
  • Provides emergency care and first aid, communication procedures for emergency situations, and prompt, accurate triage.
  • Evaluates acute and chronic injuries and refers to physician or specialist where appropriate.
  • Consults with physician and Physical Therapy on injury rehabilitation program and coordination of care.
  • Provides standardized Return to Sport Testing measures to help determine if a player may return to competition following an injury.
  • Develops, supervises, evaluates, and modifies individual exercise programs for rehabilitation to help athletes return to a pre-injury status.
  • Treats athletic injuries with protection, rest, ice, compression, evaluation, support, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, cold/heat and hydrotherapy as needed or prescribed with the availability of modalities.
  • Maintains accurate and complete student documentation as required by law, District policy and administrative regulations including injury reports, home care instructions, referrals, treatment records, rehabilitation progress notes, and insurance information.
  • Reviews student physicals and releases to ensure authenticity.
  • Files all necessary reports associated with athletic injuries and/or incidents to appropriate authority.
  • Meets with supervisor weekly to review injury logs, concussion testing, program updates, and schedules and keeps supervisor informed of issues/concerns regarding patient centered care.
  • Maintains a daily treatment log.
  • Oversees the ordering of supplies and equipment pertaining to the athletic training room and maintains an up –to- date inventory.
  • Provides the Athletic Director with an annual budget for supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains HIPPA standards of confidentiality.
  • Assists with development and implementation of quality improvement plan.
  • Participates in ongoing Orthopedic and Sports Medicine patient care programs.
  • Provides patient education resources including patient education manual and reviews directly with patient and/or family as needed.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Participates on a team for data collection, health outcomes reporting, and clinical audits.
  • Participate in orthopedic meetings and in-services as needed.
  • Pursues professional growth by attending conferences, workshops and other professional development opportunities to maintain current knowledge of profession.
  • Demonstrates professional behavior in all interactions.
  • Adheres to patient care standards and follows Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates System Values in performance and behavior.
  • Complies with System policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelor's Degree and 6 months to 1 year relevant experience.

Required Licenses/Certifications

  • Board of Certified Athletic Trainer (BOC), current and in good standing - Upon hire
  • Board of Certified Athletic Trainer (BOC) Licensed in Nevada - Within 3 months of hire into job
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers - Upon hire
  • BLS:  Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS) Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS certification) - Within 3 months of hire into job
  • Valid Driver's License in good standing - Upon hire

Other Experience/Qualifications

Required

  • A minimum of 1-2 years of professional experience, which may include Master's rotations/internships, or Graduate Assistant experience.
  • Previous experience with high school athletics.
  • Ability to crossover into administrative, teaching, clinical roles.
  • Experiences with concussion programs and testing, preferably ImPACT.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
