Join a tight-knit, mission-driven team that tackles real problems for real people in healthcare. At Take Command, you'll be doing career-defining work with a cutting-edge health insurance start-up that truly lives out it's core values.
We're looking for someone who loves a good challenge and wants to help shape the Take Command product experience for customers and internal employees. People’s health and their families’ health is important and we want to make setting that up easy and straightforward.
What you’ll do (responsibilities)
We're looking for an individual contributor (IC) who enjoys working alongside other experienced designers and engineers to quickly build and iterate on UI/UX/features.
- Design the core, user-facing product and internal tools. You'll build new areas of the product from the ground up, having a huge and direct impact to customers and your internal colleagues. You'll collaborate with front-end engineers to bring your designs to life.
- Use modern design tools. We use Figma as needed for design ideation. We’re starting to prototype in Webflow Airtable. Our design system began from Material UI components.
- Design delightful experiences. We’re making a shift to new branding and updating the product to support a growing customer base. The upcoming design work will be focused on both the customer-facing product and internal tools to support the rapidly growing business and all the new processes that accompany that growth. Our focus will be on pleasurable and meaningful experiences.
- Solve interesting design challenges. Bring your full creativity to solve super-challenging product moments: from clearly explaining complex choices to customers, to designing efficient interfaces for internal teams with seasonal spikes in workload, to helping new potential customers confidently onboard and want to spread the word.
- Build and use the design system. You’ll be essential in creating components, naming conventions, patterns, and promoting use of the design system. The design system will be a driving force in speed and clean design files for our team.
What we're looking for (qualifications)
You're an IC who knows how to collaborate to create great experiences with repeatable patterns. We don't require formal qualifications but do value learning — especially from one another. We are looking for someone that feels a sense of duty to the people who use their work.
- Highly productive while producing quality designs. You are concerned with both high quality experiences and prolific creation. You know each phase has its place: research, using paper to move lightning fast, feedback phase, and when to start on pixel perfect prototyping.
- Curious, quick learning, and self-aware. We don't expect you to have expertise in every design area and tool, but you should be eager to learn and be productive quickly. You should know your strengths and weaknesses.
- Design sensibility. While you'll co-craft the interface with other designers and frontend engineers, we expect you to have a knack for great UX, such that you feel if something is off and can flag it, or better yet, polish it.
- Attention to detail while pragmatic. You follow naming conventions for layers and components to allow designers to collaborate easily, save versions, and think through details without needing comprehensive lists or you create them yourself — all while remaining low-ego and simply focusing on solutions.
- Interested in business operations and processes. You’re motivated by business needs. You’re interested in daily business actions in product design more than flashy elaborate UI.
How we care for our Take Commanders:

- 401(k)
- Professional development stipend and access to executive coaching
- Paid parental leave for new parents
- Technology stipend
- Flexible on where you work – we hope to see you around the office a few times a week, but you also have the ability to work from home
About Take Command
Take Command is a start-up on a mission to improve the healthcare system, starting with health insurance. Pragmatically speaking, we help employers reimburse employees for individual insurance instead of offering a traditional one-size-fits-all group plan. We believe this model can empower employees (when they have the right support) to be savvy healthcare consumers and have a transformative impact on the entire healthcare system.
Let’s be honest—health insurance is usually a confusing, frustrating, and even emotional experience for people. We want to fix that with a new model, great technology, and a superior user experience. We have made a great start, but we need your help to fully realize our long-term vision.
More About Us
We recently secured our Series A funding and are thrilled to be able to expand our team. The health insurance industry needs some disruption and despite being a small startup, we’re the recognized industry leaders for the reimbursement model.
We’ve been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Dallas Morning News, and other publications around Texas and are excited about our growth opportunities .
Take Command knows diversity and inclusion among our teammates is integral to our company’s success and growth. Our commitment is to recruit, develop, and retain the best team from a diverse candidate pool.
