General Manager

Job Description:
Tall Ship Windy is the official tall ship ambassador for the City of Chicago. The 148' Four Mast Top Sail Schooner operates from Navy Pier and serves more than 40,000 guests annually. The General Manager will oversee all staff, budgets, and operations of the venue.
General Manager responsibilities include formulating and implementing overall operations strategy, managing people, and establishing and documenting policies. To be successful in this role, you should be a thoughtful leader and a confident decision-maker, helping our people develop and be productive, while ensuring our profits are on the rise. Ultimately, you’ll help our company grow and thrive. This is very much a hands-on role. The ideal General Manager will not only manage the overall operation, but will assist staff on high-volume days, train customer experience representatives and be the main liaison to the community for field marketing activities year-round. Lastly, the General Manager is expected to also serve as a working Captain for S/V Windy a minimum of three full days a week.

Oversee day-to-day operations for Tall Ship Windy at Navy Pier from April through October
· Maintain budgets and optimize expenses.
· Working closely with the Senior Master (Captain) of Tall Ship Windy to set policies and processes.
· Determine staffing requirements, and interview, hire and train new employees, or oversee those personnel processes.
· Oversee recruitment and training of new employees in particular U.S. Coast Guard licensed Captains, Senior Deckhands, Deckhands, Bar Staff and Customer Experience Representatives
· Manage staff, prepare work schedules and assign specific duties. Expectation is that the Sr. Master, On-site Guest Relations Manager (Ticket Booth) and Bar Manager will report directly to the General Manager.
· Review financial statements, sales and activity reports, and other performance data to measure productivity and goal achievement and to determine areas needing cost reduction and program improvement.
· In conjunction with the Senior Master, direct the employee assessment process.
· Prepare regular reports for upper management as requested.
· Ensure staff follow health and safety regulations.
· Establish and implement departmental policies, goals, objectives, and procedures, conferring with senior executives as necessary.
· Provide and implement solutions to issues as they arise.
· Any other duties as requested by Senior Management
Qualifications and requirements
· Bachelor’s degree or an associate degree.
· 5 to 7 years of senior management experience including 5 years of GM experience.
· Ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, to use logic and reason to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, and to monitor/assess the performance of other individuals.
· USCG MMC at 100-Ton or greater with sailing endorsement
