Copy/Assignment Editor
Tampa Bay Newspapers is seeking a dedicated and skilled copy editor who can also dig up engaging stories and help our team of staff writers and freelancers see them to fruition.
Through our 12 weekly papers, we are committed to delivering accurate and timely content to our readers in the Tampa Bay area.
In this position, you will play a role in maintaining the quality of our publications, especially in Pinellas County. You will edit articles for clarity, grammar and style while also identifying and assigning stories that align with our editorial vision for community journalism.
This is a full-time position with consistent and stable weekly hours at our Largo office, but remote work is possible. Candidates who live in Pinellas County will be preferred. Candidates who are also fluent in Spanish will be given preference.
Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with libel laws and other legal standards in the editing process.
- Quickly edit articles for grammatical accuracy, clarity and adherence to style guides.
- Assign stories to reporters and freelancers based on editorial priorities and audience interest.
- Collaborate with writers to refine story angles and ensure thorough research.
- Verify facts and sources.
- Stay updated on local current events and trends to inform story assignments.
- Work closely with the editorial team to meet deadlines and manage workflow efficiently.
Qualifications
- Minimum two years of experience as a writer or editor, preferably in a news environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field.
- Strong understanding of journalistic standards and ethics.
- Excellent command of grammar, punctuation and style.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple assignments.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with digital publishing, social media and pagination is a plus.
