School Counselor
Tate’s School is looking for a compassionate and experienced school counselor to work with students in preschool through middle school and their families. The counselor must be able to implement a counseling program to assist students in their personal, social, and academic development, as well as conduct assessments to evaluate students' abilities and ensure that students have all the tools to become productive and well-adjusted citizens.
We believe that a school counselor plays a vital role on our campus by providing valuable assistance to students through leadership, advocacy, and collaboration. Our school counselor will work with other Behavioral Health Team members to create a safe learning environment for all students and to plan, implement and oversee the results-based school counseling program that promotes student welfare.
School Counselor Job Responsibilities:
- Advises and counsels students regarding academic, educational, and short-term social and emotional problems, including helping students work through difficult situations, such as a divorce or death in the family, and appropriately refers students to behavioral health specialists
- Provides individual student planning and responsive services to support students and their families regarding academic matters
- Builds relationships with area high schools and helps students and families transition to high school after graduation
- Teaches guidance classes and provides guidance counseling to students through planned activities in small group or classroom settings to convey educational, social, and important school information, and offers workshops/seminars for parents
- Teaches Advisory Class with middle school students to help them develop critical life skills such as organization and time management, and works with the health teacher to implement sex education classes and substance abuse lessons
- Consults, facilitates, and maintains communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and alumni on specific student and parent academic and educational matters
- Provides feedback and recommends appropriate action and solutions to individual student’s academic and educational needs and abilities
- Participates on a Student Support Team, identifies students who may need interventions, and coordinates with behavioral health specialists
- Assists students/parents in understanding school policies and procedures
- Communicates, coordinates, and collaborates with behavioral health specialists on developing and implementing student supports
- Supports and attends appropriate student activities and events.
- Records alumni data and communicates with graduates and their families into college.
- Conducts student evaluations during the admissions process
School Counselor Qualifications/Skills:
- Desire and ability to work with students at the specified age levels with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability toward accomplishing their educational goals
- Ability to identify and respond to students' needs
- Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines and communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators and other staff, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive
- Working familiarity with student assessment tools, especially in evaluating and interpreting standardized test results
- Knowledge of educational software
- Working knowledge of counseling models, methods, and resources
- Excellent listening and problem-solving skills
- Must be patient and compassionate
- High level of integrity
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
- Master’s Degree in Counseling/Guidance, Education, or Social Work
- 1-2 years of experience as a school counselor, educational specialist, or related mental health professional
- Understanding and familiarity with computer applications and word processing software
