Position Summary: The school library is available to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The librarian and media specialist serves the district learning community by presenting a clear and creative vision for the school library program. This person supports the educational philosophy of the Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1. Key roles to facilitate are effective delivery of the curriculum and program administration, teaching and learning, and information access and delivery.
Duties Program Administration:
Creates an effective and engaging learning environment that aligns to school-wide values, behavioral expectations, and positive behavioral support systems.
Develops and teaches standard-based information that provides all students with instruction aligned to library and media use.
Establishes annual and long-range goals for the library media center.
Plans, administers, operates, supervises, and evaluates the media center. Working with administration team to develop policies to ensure efficient operation and optimal service.
Participates in budget planning and keeps records of all library related expenditures.
Actively participates in learning communities.
Maintains an efficient system of classifying, cataloging, and circulating all library materials; instructs teachers and students in the use of the library system.
Establishes an environment that encourages learning and fosters use, encouraging appropriate conduct of students using the library.
Supervises and trains paraprofessionals and student volunteers.
Develops cooperative relationships with local public and academic libraries and other community organizations.
Keeps record of student use, circulation, purchases, and losses. Provides regular reports on the library as required by the administration and as needed for planning purposes.
Supervise the regular inventory of library materials, evaluates the collection, removes obsolete and worn materials, and updates inventory records and the catalog.
Utilizes data to provide individualized support to students through small group instruction and to identify students in need of additional support.
Provides leadership and guidance to paraprofessionals and other school intervention staff working in the library.
Supports the development of the whole child including providing regular opportunities for social-emotional learning and character education.
Complies with all applicable state and federal laws and district policies.
Duties Instruction (Teaching and Learning):
Assist teachers in identifying and accessing materials to support content area instruction as well as professional growth.
Collaborates with classroom teachers to design, implement, and evaluate instruction that ensures integration of literature and information literacy skills into student learning.
Help students develop interest and skills leading to lifelong learning and library use.
Provide group and individual instruction in information skills, research strategies, and use of resources and equipment.
Promotes literacy, reading, and library use through such activities as book talks, displays, publications and special events.
Provides professional development for the staff in such areas as new information technologies and information literacy.
Supports the continuing education research of faculty and administrators.

Provides training to students and staff in effective use of information systems.
Interprets and applies information technology in curriculum context.
Is a leader in fostering the principles of intellectual freedom. Creates an environment to promote free inquiry and to expose students to a broad range of ideas.
Ensures intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats for all learners.
Serves as a district/school resource for issues regarding ethical use of information including issues of copyright and intellectual property.
Prepares lists of topical and new materials to support class assignments and to promote interest in reading.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand for long periods of time, walk around the classroom and school; provide verbal instruction and solicit and hear students’ responses as well as demonstrate an ability to read handwritten or typed materials.

· Master’s degree in Library Science (Required)
