Director of Special Projects

TEGNA Inc.
Atlanta, GA Full Time
POSTED ON 5/12/2024

WXIA (11Alive), TEGNA’s NBC affiliate in Atlanta, presents the dream opportunity for an initiative-taking, experienced, people-oriented leader. The Director of Special Projects, a member of our senior newsroom leadership, will guide the editorial decisions for our award-winning special projects unit which produces impactful investigations, extended live programming of special events, thought-provoking stories about race and culture, as well as “news you can use” with a consumer, audience-centric focus.

You will supervise all special news programming and news content promoted as a reason to watch on broadcast and online. This includes content tied to the Olympics, elections, fact-checking and special events in which planning is key to execution. Our ideal candidate is a collaborative, experienced producer and leader who is great at managing an editorial calendar and juggling the research, reporting, shooting, and editing of multiple projects on deadline. Through careful coaching, the special projects director elevates our station's storytelling, writing and execution.

At 11Alive, we pride ourselves on having built a collaborative, inclusive workplace culture and are committed to making sure our content reflects the diverse communities we represent. Digital takes equal stage with broadcast, so if being a part of a “one content team” is appealing, we want to hear from you!

Responsibilities:

  • Strategically lead, inspire, and guide the production of special stories and programming to build brand.
  • Manage special projects content calendar.
  • Establish protocol and workflow for responding to viewer tips.
  • Work closely with our marketing department to ensure we produce high quality, relevant stories that are a “reason to watch” and in step with the 11Alive audience-focused content strategy.
  • Foster, encourage and reward out-of-the-box thinking that leads to differentiation and success.
  • Partner with news leadership to elevate our core values, internal DE&I (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) culture, and our race and culture content.
  • Strategize with executive team on goals focused on growing our people and our audience.
  • Build relationships with news sources and community stakeholders.
  • Supervise senior producer of investigations and consumer producers, photojournalists, and reporters.
  • Execute administrative duties such as managing direct reports, creating schedules, and training new employees.
  • Assist in training and providing valuable feedback for the entire editorial team.
  • Evaluate workflow efficiencies and adjust processes and procedures, as necessary.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned, to drive and fulfill the mission while abiding by the values of this organization.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
  • Understanding of the tenets of professional journalism
  • At least eight years of news content experience and a minimum of three years’ experience managing news investigations and/or special projects.
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment for audience growth, along with staff and product development skills.
  • Persuasive communication and conflict management skills and commitment to holding people accountable.
  • Strong organizational skills in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
  • Familiarity with Atlanta or a reason to relocate here, a plus.
