Education: Position Requires an AS or AA degree from an accredited college or university in a related engineering/scientific field.

ALLOWABLE SUBSTITUTION: A High School diploma or GED credential and two (2) years of recent and relevant technical experience related to the labor category “Description” may be substituted for an AS or AA degree. These two (2) years of experience are in addition to the required minimum of six (6) years to meet the “Experience” requirements below, therefore, requiring a total of eight (8) years of experience. 


Experience: At least six (6) years of recent and relevant experience in a position related to the labor category “Description”. Four (4) years of experience, to include: installation of such equipment. One (1) year of experience, to include: design, preparation and modification of engineering documents and drawings is required. Experience may be concurrent.

Position Description: This position is a Manufacturing and Quality Specialist assigned to Critical Item Management in support of evaluating the capability of manufacturers or repair sources of critical items. The candidate will evaluate and provide recommendations for approval of contractor Source Approval Requests (SARs) for meeting design, manufacturing operations and processes, and quality management requirements established in engineering drawing packages, referenced specifications and standards, and associated technical data requirements. The candidate will be part of a site survey team and requires manufacturing and/or industrial experience and quality assurance (QA) experience.

Job Responsibilities
  • Record all product characteristics, manufacturing process requirements, and quality inspection/test requirements.
  • Confirm material, machining/assembly, and quality requirements are adequately planned. 
  • Review process certifications, in-process inspection records, first article and final inspection reports and nondestructive/destructive test reports to confirm requirements were performed as specified and product characteristics and process requirements met requirements.  
  • Assess the capability of facilities, equipment, processes, and personnel to produce mechanical hardware to specified technical requirements. 
  • Assess the suitability of a manufacturing organization to consistently produce the hardware component with high quality and reliability.
  • Ensuring all material compliance and traceability of material, processes, and the actual item manufacturer Partnering with Engineering, Operations, Suppliers and Customers to develop and maintain inspection and test criteria and process work instructions.
  • Collecting and analyzing production data to ensure product quality.
  • Examining nonconforming products and driving root cause analysis.
  • Supporting material source inspections and Customer audits.
  • Maintaining quality documents and records.

Skills Required: 
  • Experienced in reading engineering drawings, specifications, and standards on mechanical hardware components.
  • Ability to read and interpret proposed production and verification planning documents. 
  • Ability to read and interpret completed manufacturing operation sheets/travelers, process certifications, and inspection/test reports.  
  • Ability to assess machine shop. 
  • Ability to convey in writing the design, manufacturing, and quality requirements of mechanical hardware components and the suitability of a manufacturing organization.
