What are the responsibilities and job description for the IDMS Engineer position at TEKsystems c/o Allegis Group?
Job Description
Top Skills' Required
1. IDMS SME
2. COBOL development
3. Index tuning, space monitoring, and ability to recommend tasks that should be completed routinely to ensure database health
Job Description:
Our client uses Broadcom (Formerly CA) IDMS to house data for several mission critical systems. These systems have been in place for 30 years and have reached a state of maintenance only (either no or very simple system enhancements). These systems are predominantly written in COBOL and ADS Online but do have some components written in Microsoft .Net using CA Server to expose the data via ODBC and SQL Views or Table Procedures. DBA support over the last 3 years for these databases has been minimal. Prior DBAs had expanded areas to very large sizes to carry the database until they were eventually moved to relational databases
All production jobs run under a Production Central Version (CV). Developers use a Test CV.
Recently, an unexpected out of storage event (IDMS Status 1211) on the store of a relatively small record in an area that has over 30% free space caused a brief outage. They believe that the large Index records in the area caused the issue and were able to recover them by archiving some data but this may not be feasible in all cases going forward.
Assessment:
Analyze the state of the 2 databases using provided reports
Sanitized reports will be provided as requested
Space concerns/prediction of how many records can be stored
Health of the Indexes
Data fragmentation
Cross Area Pointers
Other
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Recommend options to extend the life of these databases with the least risk exposure
No experienced low-level IDMS technical support is available on site (Restructures, Expand Page, etc.)
Recommend tasks that should be completed routinely to ensure database health
Space monitoring
Index tuning
Work Environment:
Our client works in a highly regulated environment with strict limits to access to our internal networks and data. This project could be conducted remotely via "sanitized" reports sent as requested and as possible or on-site with proper government clearances.
