Job Summary

  • The surgical technologist, under the guidance of the registered nurse, is responsible for the care and safety of patients under his/her care. The ST is responsible for case preparation, assisting with patient preparation, proper handling of instruments and equipment, preparation of the sterile field based upon the specific procedure and surgeon's preference, and anticipating the surgeon's needs.

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)
  • Other: Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology (Required)

Licenses and Certifications

  • BLS - Basic Life Support (Required)
  • CST or CORT - Certified Surgical Tech/Operating Room Tech (Required within 12 MONTHS of Hire Date)

Experience

  • 1 Year experience in an operating room (Required)

General Responsibilities

  • Complies with all Temple University Health System policies and procedures, and all applicable accreditation standards, laws and regulations, including those regarding patient confidentiality such as, but not limited to, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, P. L. 104-191 ('HIPAA') and the rules and regulations implemented hereunder.

Operating Room Preparedness and Compliance

  • Assists with intraoperative tasks that fall within the scope of practice for surgical technologists.
  • Prepares and promotes a safe and comfortable environment in which surgery takes place.
  • Follows guidelines and departmental policies and procedures regarding aseptic technique and patient care standards.
  • Complies with OR and hospital attire (i.e. clothing, jewelry, fragrances, cell phones/electronics) policies.
  • Complies with Infection Control policies for personal protective equipment(PPE) and Standard Precautions.
  • Responds appropriately and efficiently in an emergency.
  • Participates in recycling and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Reports unsafe conditions and unit repair needs.

Operating Room Operations

  • Demonstrates competence in scrub role in all surgical specialties.
  • Assists in orientation of new personnel.
  • Assembles necessary instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies for surgical procedures in collaboration with the RN.
  • Assists with patient positioning providing safety and comfort measures in collaboration with the RN.
  • Assesses and predicts the needs of the patient and surgeon, and provides the necessary items in order of priority.
  • Expedites surgical procedure by handing the appropriate instruments and supplies safely and accurately.
  • Counts surgical sponges, sharps, and instruments with the RN circulator as per OR policy and procedures.
  • Performs safe intraoperative medication preparation, labeling, and handling.
  • Performs safe intraoperative specimen identification, care, handling, and verification with surgeon and circulating RN.
  • Operates OR equipment in a sterile field as required to complete procedures in the Operating Room.
  • Prepares used instruments for decontamination and processing.
  • Assists team with cleaning and preparation of the OR for the next procedure

Equipment Maintenance & Inventory (FCCC)

  • Utilizes principles of proper cleaning and sterilization techniques.
  • Performs procedures for disinfection and sterilization, and monitors the effect of these procedures.
  • Demonstrates proper and skillful assembly and preparation of surgical instruments and devices.
  • Maintains and stocks adequate unit supplies and equipment.
  • Organizes and conducts inventories and requests supplies when needed.
  • Keeps all supplies and equipment ready for use.
  • Maintains current knowledge base of instrumentation, equipment, and supplies used, and manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning and sterilization.
