We have an opening for an Associate Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Mathematics at our Southwest Tennessee-Macon Cove campus!

Southwest Tennessee Community College is a comprehensive, multicultural, public, open— access award winning college. Southwest has 6 locations from which it offers over 100 programs and over 20 technical certificate programs. We foster student success, transform lives, and increase the educational level of a diverse community in Shelby and Fayette counties. Southwest is a Tennessee Board of Regents institution, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Division of Humanities (DoH) consists of five academic departments: Communications, Graphic, and Fine Arts, Department of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, Languages and Literature, Mathematics, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The division accounts for 52% of full-time faculty, and over 100 adjunct faculty. While DoH’s core function is general education, the division is home to 35 academic transfer programs, three Associate of Applied Science and two certificate programs, preparing students for entry into the workforce.

The Associate Dean provides leadership, innovation, management, advocacy, as well as strategic initiatives designed to close academic achievement and equity gaps in general and corequisite education and Gatekeeper courses. The Associate Dean advises the Dean of Humanities and can articulate a strategy for equity and addressing educational gaps for underserved communities and underrepresented student populations in an urban, community college setting.  The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge and established experience in accreditation, assessment, and strategic planning. The candidate can also demonstrate a track record of data collection and program and student learning outcomes assessment. The Associate Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Mathematics is a full-time, 12-month position reporting to the Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Mathematics.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as Gatekeeper Faculty Fellowship Director.
  • Provides administrative oversight to the General Education Committee and serves as the TBR General Education Core Steering Committee Representative and Campus Team Leader.
  • Develops and maintains an academic plan in alignment with the division goals, College’s mission and strategic plan, with the over-arching goal of supporting student success.
  • Coordinates a data collection and assessment strategy for student learning and program outcomes to measure and plan continuous improvement. Serves as the Institutional Effective (IE) Coordinator for the division.
  • Monitors quality assurance to ensure compliance with the College’s mission, Tennessee Board of Regents requirements, SACSCOC Standards, federal laws and regulations, and all other applicable accrediting bodies.
  • Oversees and coordinates the development of a division newsletter, including editing and proofreading newsletter for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style.
  • Collaborates with the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence to promote faculty and professional development activities across the division.
  • Collaborates with the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence to integrate high impact practices in both curricular and co-curricular formats to increase the quality and depth of experiential education activities in general education and co-requisite courses.
  • Collaborates with Dean and Human Resources to review and update policies and procedures that impact the division.
  • Works with business and industry partners and K-12 partners to expand work-based learning/dual-enrollment opportunities.
  • Foster the development of projects with local government, business community, economic development organizations and non-profit agencies that will help advance community interests as well as provide learning opportunities for students.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, management, relationship-building and negotiation skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; as well as marketing and public relations, fiscal management, and group facilitation skills.
  • The Associate Dean has the authority to act as the official Dean in the absence of the Dean.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in one of the disciplines supervised or related fields, with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the discipline. 
  • Minimum of (3) three years full-time teaching in one of the academic disciplines in the division.
  • Three (3) years of demonstrated administrative leadership. e.g. Assistant or Associate Dean, Division Director, Chair, or Coordinator.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Ability to lead strategic planning, program accreditation review as necessary, and assessment in the interest of promoting academic program excellence.
  • Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintain them over time.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, including the ability to master complex issues and convey information clearly for varied audiences; and ability to develop and communicate goals in support of the college's mission.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software (word processing, spreadsheets, and other processes).
  • Ability to compile, check, proofread, and verify text data, and statistics accurately.
  • Ability to write and edit messages, memos, letters, summaries and reports.
  • Ability to complete complex assignments successfully, analyze practical problems, recommend solutions, and implement authorized actions.
  • Physical ability to work in an office environment and travel independently between campus locations.
  • A background will be required for the successful candidate.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in one of the disciplines supervised or related fields.
  • Three (3) years of demonstrated administrative leadership, e.g., Dean, Associate Dean, Division Director, Chair, or Coordinator, preferably in an urban community college setting.
  • Proven ability in planning, implementing and managing budgets for large units, including grants.
