What are the responsibilities and job description for the Farm Manager - Agriculture position at TERI Campus of Life?
TERI Farms is a growing 3-acre production farm located in the northern part of San Diego County, that includes a small orchard (over 100 fruit trees on various sites). 1 acre of row crops, a flock of chickens, 3 pigs, an outdoor classroom, microgreens hoop houses, hedgerows, habitat areas, and educational gardens. The Farm Manager will work closely with and report to the Director on developing and implementing new program initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement all farming activities, including (but not limited to) crop planning, succession planting, irrigation, orchard and native garden maintenance, soil building, composting, harvesting, use of cover crop, seed selection, pest management, seeding, greenhouse propagation, transplanting, farm maintenance, and weed mitigation on Montgomery farm, Parham Farm, and Marshall farm.
- Work with the Director to ensure operations stay within the annual budget.
- Maintain orchards at all residential homes with fruit trees, including planting, pruning, composting, disease & pest management, and harvesting.
- Document all necessary logs, including (but not limited to) planting log, pest management log, maintenance log, harvest log.
- Supervise and train staff.
- Coordinate with relevant parties and supervise farming volunteer projects.
- Comply with all organic farming regulations.
- Complete the organic certification process and ensure certification is current.
- Maintain detailed records of field tasks, planting locations, inputs, and field notes to comply with organic standards and communicate transparently.
- Provide farm tours and an overview of growing practices to educators, visitors, and donors, as needed.
- Complete monthly receipts report on Interlink.
- Solicit donations for farm supplies in alignment with Director.
- Purchase all necessary farm supplies as needed.
- Build upon distribution infrastructure for CSA, donations, and retail sales.
- Communicate, coordinate, and facilitate client-appropriate activities on the farm for CAAE, Country School, and TLA, and other day programs as appropriate.
- Attend company meetings as required, including (but not limited to) manager meetings, team meetings, and budget meetings.

Range: $22 - $25 / Hour

- An Associates or Bachelor's Degree in agriculture, agroecology, sustainability, food studies, or environmental sciences is highly desirable, but not required.
- Ideally, 2 or more years organic farming experience, including increasing responsibilities and familiarity with CSA and Farmers Markets programs.
- Ability to drive a tractor and utilize farm equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Ability to lift 40 pounds regularly, bend, lift, climb ladders, reach, dig, do physical labor for upwards of 8-hour days, and work outside in all weather conditions.
- Acceptable driving history and ability tot pass a background check.
- Experience and ability to coordinate volunteers.
- Experience and ability to teach diverse audiences at varying skill levels.
- Demonstrated communications and interpersonal skills, especially in stressful situations.
- Experience and ability working with people of all ages from diverse ethnic and cultural background
- Self-motivated and self-managing including time management.
- Strong record-keeping and computer literacy. Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, and Google Docs)
- Flexible and understands unique challenges of farming in community and commitment to meeting those challenges daily.
- Ability to speak and understand Spanish is a bonus.
- Working knowledge of agricultural research methods and/or food & agricultural grant making is highly desirable but not required.
- Must receive a negative marijuana/drug screen.
