Qualifications
Required Education:
bachelor's degree or equivalent
Required Experience:
3 years of related experience with production horticultural
Preferred Education:
BS in a plant related field
Preferred Experience:
10 plus years experience with greenhouse production, variety trialing, data collection, typical farm building and maintenance
Required Licenses and Certifications:
WPS trainer- may be obtained within 3 months of hire date.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
Pesticide application license
Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of horticultural practices, ability to drive a tractor and load and unload implements, apply pesticides with airblast and pump sprayers and through chemigation. Repair and install irrigation lines. Collect and log data related to scientific projects and variety trials. Work independently. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience in a vineyard and fruit operation. Welding, farm construction skills, Experience with greenhouse equipment and production. Experience with basic building maintenance.
Other Requirements:
Must be able to work independently with strong attention to detail. Should be available some nights, holidays and weekends to answer alarms or attend to required duties. Able to travel up to 5 nights a year. Must be willing and able to apply both organic and conventional pesticides as needed. Able to work in inclement weather.
Job Responsibilities
40%: Manages and maintains the research farm plant crops including field shade and greenhouse crops. Proper use and maintenance of field equipment including irrigation equipment, tractor and implements. Includes, pruning, planting and removal of old plant material, pest control, irrigation and harvest.
15%: Map planting, and records collection samples and data seasonally. May be required to travel to collect data or assist with production at remote locations.
15%: Responsible for the repairs, maintenance, transportation, and storage of equipment. Assists in rebuilding, repainting, and re-flooring trailers, maintaining and doing small repairs to tractors, sprayers, and other implements and field equipment. Assists with maintaining Extension vehicles.
15%: Maintains and assists in the daily operation of standard greenhouse equipment including hand watering and automated watering systems
10%: Building maintenance and repair including light building and assembly projects.
5%: Performs other duties as assigned.
